Prerequisite When Applying for a Seattle University Scholarship

All students applying for financial aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Indicate on the FAFSA that you want the results sent to:

Diversity Scholarships: Overview

There are eight Seattle University diversity scholarships available each year. All Seattle University diversity scholarships are awarded based on financial need. These scholarships are targeted to members of ethnic groups who have traditionally been underrepresented in higher education. Those underrepresented groups are: American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, Black Non-Hispanic, and Hispanic. Applicants must be citizens of the United States or resident aliens. Distribution of the Diversity Scholarship is as follows:

  • 6 Scholarships to MIT (3 for each entering cohort) - at approximately $14,400 total for each diversity scholarship over a maximum of 4 quarters which is the normal MIT program length
  • 2 Scholarships to programs according to College of Education priorities - at $825 per quarter for a maximum of 6 quarters (not including summers) and not to exceed two academic years

Diversity Scholarship: Application Process

State Farm Insurance Scholarships for Hispanics Pursuing a Teaching Career

In addition the the Seattle University diversity scholarships, State Farm Insurance annually offers $2,500 scholarships to 20 Hispanic college students who are pursuing a teaching career. Click on THIS LINK to get information about these 20 Hispanic teaching career scholarships.


Future Teachers of Color

There is $25,000 to give out for future teachers of color in 2008-2009 with dollars available in July 2008. The application deadline is March 14, but it has been extend it to March 19. This scholarship can be for graduate or undergraduate students, but the students have to have some indication of seriousness of intent to become a teacher.

Educator Retooling Program: For Current Teachers to Add an Endorsement

The Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) has funding available to support teachers to add the following endorsements:

  • Secondary Mathematics
  • Any Secondary Science area
  • Middle Level Math/Science
  • Bilingual Education
  • English as a Second Language
  • Special Education

Funding is also available for unemployed Washington certified Elementary Education teachers to add Middle Level Math and Science endorsements via Pathway II- Taking the Praxis II and completing the pedagogy assessment. This option is not available at Seattle University but is offered at other Washington state colleges and universities.

Funds may be used to pay for Praxis II exams, university administration for the pedagogy assessment, and tuition for coursework.

Funding for this program is through the Conditional Loan Scholarship program. The conditional scholarship is a loan that is forgiven for teaching service (in the added endorsement area) in a Washington state K-12 public school. The state shall forgive the loan obligation entirely if the recipient teaches in the shortage area endorsement area in a Washington state public school for two years.

Applicants who receive priority during the selection process MUST teach those subjects in Washington K-12 public schools, or repay the money they received.

Washington State Future Teachers Conditional Scholarship and Loan Repayment Program

The Future Teachers Conditional Scholarship and Loan Repayment Program of the State of Washington is designed to encourage outstanding students and paraprofessionals to become teachers, and to encourage current teachers to obtain additional endorsements in teacher shortage subjects. In return for conditional scholarships (estimated up to $6,200) or loan repayments, participants agree to teach in Washington K-12 public schools, (usually two years of teaching for each year of funding). Applicants pursuing certificates or additional endorsements in math, science, or special education can receive priority in the selection process if they commit to teaching that subject in Washington K-12 public schools. Math or science must be taught at grade 7 or higher to receive priority; special education may be taught at any grade level.

Applicants who receive priority during the selection process MUST teach those subjects in Washington K-12 public schools, or repay the money they received.

TEACH Grants

Through the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, Congress created the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program that provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families. If, after reading all of the information on this fact sheet, you are interested in learning more about the TEACH Grant Program, you should contact the Seattle University financial aid office if you will be enrolled in the 2008-2009 school year.

Effective Dates

The first TEACH Grants will be awarded to eligible students for the 2008-2009 school year.


Federal Aid Programs

The federal government offers a variety of programs and benefits to help students pay for college. You may be eligible for one or more of the federal programs or tax benefits listed on the Washington State Higher Education Coordinating board web site.


Special Endowed Scholarships

There are three College of Education endowed scholarships that are awarded by a College committee based on a list of eligible students provided by student financial services in the March of the year before the scholarships can be used. In order to be considered for inclusion in the list for the endowed McCleary scholarship, a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) must be filled out by no later than February 1 of the academic school year proceeding the academic school year when the scholarship can be used (EXAMPLE: February 1, 2008, for a scholarship award that can be used in fall 2008, winter 2009, and/or spring 2009). Catholic School Special Tuition Grant

The Seattle University Special Tuition Grant provides up to a 50 percent tuition reduction for full-time teachers and principals in Catholic schools of the Archdiocese of Seattle who are enrolled in the College of Education. A separate application from the Seattle University Student Financial Services OfÞce is required. Students must be fully admitted to a master's program in the College of Education. The grant is not available for doctoral, pre-service teacher preparation (MIT) classes or to students eligible for Matteo Ricci College tuition remission.
