Secondary Endorsements

Students seeking an endorsement in secondary education will earn a certificate to teach fifth through twelth grades. The strongest candidates will have completed an undergraduate degree with a major in the subject area they wish to teach.

All secondary candidates must complete the endorsement coursework outlined in the endorsement verification form for their subject area. This coureswork must be completed prior to starting the MIT program.

Applicants do not need to have all of the coursework completed at the time of application. Applicants in this situation should indicate their plans for how they will complete the requirements prior to the program start date. Under special circumstances, students starting in the Spring cohort may use the summer after their first quarter to complete their prerequisites.

Endorsements for secondary teachers at Seattle University:

*Students seeking an endorsement in Theater Arts, Earth Science, or ELL must also have an endoresment in a second subject area. Common combinations are Theater Arts and Language Arts, Earth Science and General Science, and ESL and any other endorsement area, including Elementary.

**Students seeking an endorsement in any foreign language who do not have an undergraduate degree in that language must take the oral section of the ACTFL. This requirement may be waived for native speakers. If you have any questions, please contact the MIT office: 206-296-5759.

Middle School Endorsement
Secondary applicants may add a middle school endorsement in humanities, science, and/or math. The requirements for each are listed on the Middle School Endorsement Verification Form.
