Frequently Asked Questions

How many times a year do you admit students to the program?

For greatest flexibility for your graduate study, we admit students to the program every quarter. Application deadlines: May 20 for summer entry; July 20 for fall entry; November 20 for winter entry; and February 20 for spring entry.

Do I need to have a Washington State teaching certificate in order to be admitted?

Yes. The LITC programs are all designed for experienced, certificated teachers who can apply their strong background in teaching to their graduate study.

I don’t have two years of full-time K-12 teaching experience, but I have been a substitute teacher. Can I be admitted?

No. We have found that students need at least two years of full-time teaching in order to make the most of their educational experiences.

Can I take the program full time and complete it in one or two years?

The programs are designed for working teachers who take one or two courses each quarter during the academic year and two or three courses in the summer. Courses in fall, winter, and spring quarters meet once a week in the evening. Some summer courses meet twice a week during the day. In our small and personalized program, the LITC courses are offered only once per year. Therefore, the program is designed for part-time students.

What is the statement of purpose that is required for admission?

The program would like you to discuss the goals you have set for yourself as a professional and explain how you believe the LITC program will help you meet them. The statement of purpose helps us ensure that the program you have applied for will be a good fit for your professional goals.

More information on admission to the LITC programs is available from Graduate Admissions
