WA Teaching Endorsements
Students who wish to earn the Washington State endorsement in reading and/or credits toward the endorsement in special education through the Literacy for Special Needs program must already hold a Washington State teaching certificate and have at least two years of full-time K-12 teaching experience.
If you do not already have a Washington State teaching certificate, you may want to investigate the Master in Teaching Program.
Reading Endorsement
Completion of the master's degree in Literacy for Special Needs, the Post-master's Certificate: Literacy Specialist, or the Graduate Endorsement-Only Program in Reading will lead to the Washington State endorsement in reading. The reading endorsement form is available either in the program office or from the program director.
Special Education Endorsement
Completion of the master's degree in Literacy for Special Needs provides 16 credits toward the Washington State endorsement in special education. For more information on obtaining the endorsement in special education, please visit the Special Education Program website.
Content Test
Candidates for the reading or special education endorsement must pass the Washington Educator Skills Test (WEST-E) in order to demonstrate content knowledge. For the reading endorsement, take the WEST-E Reading (030). For the special education endorsement, take the WEST-E Special Education (070).
