Student Advising
Two kinds of advisors are integral to student growth and success in the doctoral program. The first is the academic advisor and the second is the dissertation committee chair or dissertation advisor.

Academic Advisor
The full time (core) doctoral faculty members serve as academic advisors and one is assigned to students during the first week of EDLR 600. This faculty member remains the student's academic advisor throughout the program. If it appears that there may be a better match with another faculty member, a change can be requested.

Role and function of the academic advisor:
- Consults with the student on an ongoing basis (Faculty are open to advising in person, by phone, or by e-mail.)
- Assists in planning the student's program of study
- Serves as the initial contact for review and approval of petitions
- Reviews, distributes and approves the student's idea paper leading to a dissertation topic; consults with the student regarding the naming of a dissertation committee chair and the dissertation committee
- Processes all initial paperwork for the student, i.e., program of study, formation of committees, graduation work sheets, and request to graduate.

Dissertation Committee Chair
As a general rule, the dissertation committee chair will be one of the core faculty members but students may select a chair from other qualified faculty members in the College of Education.
It is up to the student to make an initial inquiry regarding willingness of a faculty member to be a dissertation committee chair. This may be done as early as the first month in the program. The actual naming of the committee chair is a joint decision but must be approved by the Program Director. That decision is usually made once an idea paper has been approved. Such factors as the wishes of the student, the match between the student's idea for study, faculty expertise and interest, and faculty work loads are included in the decision making process. Efforts will be made to honor student requests, however the final approval of the committee chair rests with the Program Director.

Role and function of the dissertation committee chair:
- Assists the student in preparing a proposal
for a dissertation or doctoral project (The
proposal remains, however, the responsibility
of the student.)
- Supervises the process of the dissertation
or doctoral project completion.
- Acts as member and chair of the doctoral
committee
- Supervises and reviews the selection of
other committee members (However, final approval
rests with the Program Director.)
- Supervises and recommends a grade forthe
student's dissemination project, i.e.,
an article or presentation as described in
the syllabus for EDLR 611
- Approves the final draft of the dissertation
prior to the student's defense
- Works with the student to ensure final draft
of dissertation meets program guidelines.

Please refer to Dissertation Guidelines for information about selection of committee members, the role and function of the committee members, and actions needed to complete the dissertation. Specific forms are filed at each stage of the process. These forms can be obtained in the EDLR Program Office (507 Loyola Hall), by clicking on the link below, or in the folder on the left labeled "Forms-Dissertation Related."
- Form D-1 (PDF file) for selection of the dissertation committee chair.
- Form D-2 (PDF file) for selection of the dissertation committee members.
- Form D-3 (PDF file) is filed when the dissertation proposal has been accepted.
- Form D-4 (PDF file) is filed when comprehensive and special exams (if applicable) have been completed.
- Form D-5 (PDF file) is filed when the dissertation committee completes examination of the student's dissertation. This form is usually signed at the dissertation defense meeting.
- Form D-6 (PDF file) is filed when the program director approves and signs off on the student's dissertation. Students are not approved for graduation until Form D-6 has been filed with the EDLR program office and a copy sent to the Registrar's Office.
