The College of Education enthusiastically announces the revision of its Educational Leadership Doctoral Program (EDLR). The College spent more than two years updating one of the University's most distinguished programs to address the complex and  ever-changing needs of today's leaders.

The revised program is an example of the College and University's ongoing commitment to academic excellence and leadership development. Elements of the program that have been central its success for 36 years remain constant and are enhanced by innovative teaching techniques (a combination of hybrid, face-to-face and on-line learning), new and redesigned curriculum, well-defined areas of specialization,research-strengthening opportunities and immersion experiences that will support leadership practitioners in becoming culturally competent in a diverse, interdependent world. Graduates of the program will be prepared for the evolving demands of leaders, attractive to potential employers and equipped to contribute to their organization and profession.

"We've taken a program with a history of preparing excellent leaders and made it even better,"said Sue Schmitt, Ed.D., Dean of the College of Education for the past 16 years. "Students who emerge from this revised program will be effective in leadership roles in a continually changing landscape of leadership in our region and in our world."

The EDLR program, established in1976, has a distinguished reputation for producing leaders throughout the world. The College is extremely proud of the more than 500 alumni who have graduated from the program including chancellors and college presidents, award-winning superintendents and principals and leaders in business, non-profits and government

"Seattle University's Educational Leadership Program truly prepared me for leadership positions,"said Dr. Jill Wakefield, alumna of the program, Chancellor of Seattle Community Colleges, and a member of the task force that consulted on the redesign. "The revisions build on the program's strengths and will prepare leaders for the transformational changes we are facing in higher education, especially those of globalization and technology."

Professionals in any career field with an earned master's degree and professional experience, who work well in groups with diverse membership, demonstrate a commitment to social justice, have and seek experiences in serving diverse populations and are committed to the leadership program competencies should apply.

Applications are being accepted for the Summer 2012 cohort-priority will be given to those who apply by April 15. Online applications are available at the Graduate Admissions website. For more information, contact the EDLR program office at (206) 296-6170.

What Our Students Are Saying

"Leadership is an elusive concept, but Seattle University's EDLR program brings the concept to life. This doctoral program creates exciting new career paths for students through inspirational faculty, demanding curriculum, and a cohort model that encourages students to learn with each other throughout the life of their program." James Harvey, Director of the National Superintendents Roundtable and current EDLR student

"What I value most about the EDLRprogram is that it continually inspires me to be a leader for others. This program has challenged me to grow as an individual and helped me to recognize that being a leader is not about one's position, but about leading by example, living with integrity, and helping others to achieve their personal best." Marianne McGah, Theology and Campus Minister, Holy Names Academy, and Doctoral Student, EducationalLeadership
