The deadline for summer/fall admission is March 1.

Admission Criteria

We are looking for applicants who:

  • Show an ability to succeed academically
  • Have work experience (paid or volunteer) in human services
  • Have strong recommendations from people who know their work/people skills
  • Are a good fit with our mission
  • Will be a good addition to the classroom and a credit to Seattle U as interns and graduates

To be considered, applicants must have/submit:

Letter of Intent

  • A two-page (maximum) letter of intent that includes goals for the program, professional goals and a response to the Seattle University Mission Statement and/or the Counseling Program Mission Statement.

Resume

  • Two-page professional résumé documenting education, volunteer and professional experience.
  •

    Transcripts

    • Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in the area of human services: psychology, sociology, social work, education, nursing, women’s studies, cultural studies or a related academic area.
    • Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in any other discipline may apply if they have completed:
      • a) 45 quarter hour credits (or 30 semester credits) in courses related to human services, or
      • b) 500 supervised work/volunteer hours in human services.
      • These applicants must submit the Counseling Programs Supplemental Application form (available in the application) Part 1 listing the 45 quarter credits (or 30 semester credits) in a human services discipline; or Part 2 listing the volunteer/work experience.

    • Applicants who are currently completing their bachelor's degree may still apply, as long as the degree will be complete by the start of graduate classes. We encourage applicants who are still completing a bachelor's degree to have paid or volunteer work experience in human services.

    Minimum GPA of 3.00

    • As calculated from bachelor's degree work and any credits completed after the bachelor's degree. This includes transfer credits.
    • Applicants with less than a 3.00 GPA may apply and may be considered for probationary admission.
    • The Counseling Program does not require the GRE. However, applicants from non-graded bachelor’s degree programs must submit GRE scores.

    Recommendations

    • Two recommendations using College of Education forms, available here.
    • Choose employers, administrators or supervisors who are familiar with your work and your interpersonal skills.
    • Do not choose peers, friends, or therapists.
    •

      Interview and Decision Process

    • Applicants who are invited to a group interview with faculty members and other candidates will be notified by email within 4 weeks after the application deadline passes.
    • Interview dates for the 2014-2015 school year will be posted soon. Applicants are asked to keep at least one of the dates open, as the admissions interview is mandatory for all applicants living in the US.
    • Admission decisions are sent by letter within 14 days after the group interview.

Apply online or print an application
    here.

For further details about the application process, visit http://www.seattleu.edu/graduate-admissions/ or contact Graduate Admissions.

    Probationary Admission

Applicants whose academic credentials are below the expected prerequisite course work, grade point average and/or test scores of those typically accepted to specific programs, but who through other means convey the potential for academic success, warrant offers of provisional or probationary admission. Probationary admission involves a specific time limit during which the student is expected to achieve the minimum GPA noted at the time of admission. When this condition is fulfilled, the department usually recommends advancement of regular graduate student status.

PLEASE NOTE:  The Counseling Program operates under a cohort model that begins in the fall term. Admitted students may choose to take some foundational courses during the summer. We no longer admit students for the winter or spring terms.
