Training for Tutors
Volunteers who wish to become tutors with our program must first attend one of our training sessions. During the sessions which are held at the beginning of each quarter, representatives from the schools come to speak about the different volunteer opportunities that they have and a panel of expert volunteers talks about their successes and challenges and offers advice to new tutors. We also provide training in the following areas:
- liability issues
- building relationships with children
- positive discipline and motivation
- diversity and learning styles
- reading with children
- the new language of math
- games / activities to help learning.
Volunteers receive a tutor handbook and have many chances to interact with other tutors and to ask questions. An on-site orientation is provided by the school and occurs on the first day of tutoring.
