Tutor Orientation Training Schedule
Because the Children’s Literacy project is a university-based organization, our tutoring schedule revolves around the quarter system. New tutors are recruited and placed in the schools in October, January, and April. New volunteers are required to attend a training session prior to volunteering. Winter 2010 Schedule:
• Wednesday, January 13: 6:00 — 9:00pm - location TBA
• Friday, Jan. 15: 1:30 – 4:30pm – location TBA
• Saturday, Jan. 16: – 9:30am – 12:30pm – location TBADuring the tutor orientation sessions, volunteers learn about the different school options, set their schedules, and fill out the necessary paperwork required by the Seattle Public School District. The following topics are covered in the tutor orientation:
* Working in a school environment,
* Liability issues
* Building relationships
* Positive discipline,
* Learning challenges,
* Cultural diversity,
* Reading, math and homework strategies
Volunteers also receive a tutor handbook and have many chances to interact with other volunteers and to ask questions during the training session. Once volunteers are placed in the schools, the CLP staff provides ongoing training and support.
