Biography

Manivong J. Ratts is Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology at Seattle University. He is past-President of Counselors for Social Justice, a division of the American Counseling Association (ACA), and founder of Seattle University Counselors for Social Justice, an advocacy organization that addresses issues of equity impacting individuals, communities, and schools. Dr. Ratts received his Ph.D. in Counseling from Oregon State University (OSU). He also holds an associates degree from Yakima Valley Community College, a bachelor's degree in psychology from Western Washington University, and a master's degree in counseling from OSU. He is a national certified counselor, a licensed school counselor, and a licensed mental health counselor associate. Dr. Ratts also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Counseling and Development and the Journal for Social Action in Counseling and Psychology. His writing and research is in the area of social justice, multicultural competence, and social justice advocacy. He is the lead co-editor of the book ACA Advocacy Competencies: A Social Justice Framework for Counselors (2010). His teaching, scholarship and service promote social justice in the counseling profession and encourages counselors, psychologists, and other mental health professionals to consider the place of advocacy in counseling. Dr. Ratts also operates a part-time private clinical practice in Seattle.
