employersSelf Assessments

Self Assessment is the process of utilizing instruments such as questionnaires to develop an understanding of self including values, interests, aptitudes, abilities, personal traits, and desired life style, and become aware of the interrelationship between self and occupational choice.

The goal is to arrive at several possible answers or ideas. It is important to remember that there are no right or wrong answers, but rather is a process that looks at various possibilities.

Assessment Methods

The Career Services utilizes several tools to help students either narrow or broaden their focus, depending on their individual needs. These tools include the Strong Interest Inventory (SSI) and Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).

Myers Briggs Type Indicator

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator ® (MBTI) is an instrument that can help an individual understand personality and the attributes of personality that makes them a unique person. The information enhances understanding of yourself, your motivations, your natural strengths and your potential areas of growth. The MBTI ® inventory can help individuals understand how they interact with others and are perceived by others. The results measure an individuals preference along four areas:

  • Where you prefer to focus your attention and get energy
  • Your preferred way of taking in information
  • Your preferred way of making a decision
  • How you orient yourself in relation to the outer world

People tend to develop behaviors, skills and attitudes associated with their type. When we use our preferred methods, we are generally at our best, feel most competent, natural and energetic. Taking the MBTI ® allows you to develop an understanding of your personal traits and become aware of the interrelationship between self and occupational choice.

This knowledge about yourself can help you make better-informed decisions and career choices. The assessments costs $15.00 for SU students, $30 for SU staff and alumni and $40 for friends of the university (please note the cost is $20.00 for student groups, classes or staff/faculty trainings).
