John Dear is internationally known for his voice in supporting peace and nonviolence. He advocates for nonviolence in our world through his own actions, teachings, literary works, and lectures. He has been described as “the embodiment of a peacemaker” by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008.

John Dear is a Jesuit priest, pastor, peacemaker, organizer, lecturer, retreat leader, and author/editor of 30 books. He has been involved in several organizations that have taken him across the globe, including El Salvador, where he lived and worked in a refugee camp in 1985, and Iraq, where he led a group of Nobel Peace Prize winners to witness the effects violent sanctions have on Iraqi children. In the United States he served as a Red Cross Chaplain after the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center. He worked with families who lost loved ones while he spoke out against the bombing of Afghanistan. He has served as pastor of several parishes from 2002-2004 in New Mexico, co-founded Pax Christi New Mexico, and worked on several campaigns to disarm Los Alamos. He has even worked with Mother Teresa to help end the death penalty.

He has organized hundreds of demonstrations against war and nuclear weapons at military bases across the country. As a result of his demonstrations to promote peace, John Dear has been arrested over seventy-five times in acts of nonviolent civil disobedience, and has spent eight months in North Carolina county jails.

Presently, John Dear speaks to tens of thousands of people each year in churches and schools across the country and world. He continues to write a weekly column for the “National Catholic Reporter.” He is featured in several other books and an array of U.S. publications, as well as in the DVD documentary film, The Narrow Path, and the subject of John Dear on Peace.
