Soccer teams to play on field fit for champions

Seattle University's men and women's soccer teams will be on a new playing field come this summer.

Construction of an intercollegiate practice and play field at the current site of Championship Field will commence with a groundbreaking ceremony January 27 at 3 p.m. The event will take place near the northeast corner of the field next to the tennis courts. A reception will follow.

Championship Field will be transformed into a veritable field of dreams outfitted with a natural grass playing surface, a covered seating area, a press box, new scoreboard and rubberized running surface.

"This is a significant milestone for the Department of Athletics and Seattle University. It will tremendously enhance the experience of our student-athletes, alumni and fans," said Athletic Director Wendy Guthrie. "It is also my hope that this will pave the way for increasing the stature and presence of Redhawk Athletics and will set a standard of excellence for athletic facilities."

The project is set for completion by the start of pre-season training in August.
