Albers
Program Wins Presidential Award
The Global
Business EDGE Program has been selected
to receive the President's E-Award. The
award will be presented by President
George Bush at a White House ceremony on
May 20th. The E-Award recognizes
persons, firms, or organizations which
contribute significantly in the effort
to increase United States exports. In
the EDGE program, business students are
frequently consulting with local
businesses, large and small, to expand
sales in overseas markets.

Program was first offered in Fall, 2002,
and since that time over 50 regional
firms have been assisted by teams of
Albers graduate students.

Both
Sides of the Rim
David
Reid was interviewed by media on
both sides of the Pacific Rim during the
same week – on April 18th by TBS (one of
the largest and the most popular
networks in Japan) for "The Broadcaster"
(the Japanese equivalent of "60
Minutes") regarding the impact of the
Dalai Lama’s visit to Seattle, and on
April 16th by KOMO 1000 on the global
impact of high world rice prices.

Luncheon
Over 350
gathered for the Gonzaga – Seattle U.
Business School Collaborative Luncheon
on April 28th at the Sheraton Hotel in
downtown Seattle. The event featured
John Stossel, of ABC News and 20/20,
as the keynote speaker. Proceeds
supported scholarships for business
students at the two schools.
PSE CEO
to Speak
Steve
Reynolds, Chairman and CEO of Puget
Energy, will be speaking as part of the
Albers Executive Speaker Series on
Tuesday, May 6th. The event will be from
5:30 to 6:30 PM in Pigott Auditorium.
The title of his presentation is
"Cleaner, Greener, Smarter."
National
JesuitMBA Day of Service
On April
12th, about 50 Albers grad students,
faculty, and staff participated in the
National JesuitMBA Day of Service. They
joined MBA students at Jesuit schools
around the country participating in the
event. The SU group assisted the Seattle
Children's PlayGarden by creating more
garden bed areas for the children to use
for planting, fixing the rabbit hutch,
weeding, moving compost and wood chips,
and various other projects.

Carlos
Mello-e-Souza is leaving Albers to
take a position at Susquehanna
University in Selingsgrove, PA. Carlos
previously taught at Penn State in State
College, PA. He will be dearly missed by
his colleagues and students.
New
Staff Members
Rob
Bourke is joining Albers as the new
Assistant Director of Alumni Relations
and Annual Giving. He served at the
Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey,
CA as Director of Alumni Relations for
four years. Rob has his undergraduate
degree from Auburn, served in the navy,
was a research assistant in the Coastal
Ocean Acoustics Lab, and managed the
Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce
Visitor Information Center.
Hannah
Hepfer is joining Albers as a
Programs Coordinator in the Center for
Leadership Formation. Hannah is a
graduate of Santa Clara. After
graduation, she did volunteer work in an
orphanage in Zambia with the Salesian
Lay Missioners. She then returned to the
Northwest where she has worked for the
Shilshole Bay Beach Club and DRY Soda.
What
Does Compassion Look Like?
Approximately 25 works from the "What
Does Compassion Look Like?" exhibition
will be installed in the Pigott Building
over the next few weeks, where they will
remain until 2010 when they will move to
their permanent home in the new SU
Library/Learning Commons. The art works
are the result of a state-wide artistic
initiative undertaken in connection with
the Dalai Lama’s visit to Seattle last
month. Forty-three outstanding Northwest
artists were asked to respond to the
question "What does compassion look
like?" in any artistic medium, within a
size limit of 24 inches by 24 inches.
Fr. Jerry Cobb facilitated the
acquisition of the collection.

Tom
Kelley is once again guiding student
in MKTG 554 (aka “EDGE Class”). The
international business projects the
students will be working on are with
Brook Running, Expeditors, Intermec, and
Nokia.

Annual Meeting
Dean
Joseph Phillips has just returned
from the AACSB Annual Meeting in
Honolulu April 13-15. The main themes
remain assessment, faculty
qualifications, and sustainability in
the curriculum.

Forum
Over 260
gathered to hear Alex Counts, CEO
of the Grameen Foundation, speak on
micro-lending at the Genevieve Albers
Forum on April 7th.
Albers
Fellow
Dr.
James Lee, Assistant Professor of
Information Systems at SUNY Binghamton,
will be joining us as the Genevieve
Albers Fellow for 2008-09. Dr. Lee will
teach ECIS classes for us. His PhD is
from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
and his publications have appeared in
such journals as The Communications of
the ACM, Issues in Information Systems,
Industrial Management and Data Systems,
and the International Journal of
E-business Research. He is following
Dr. Hui Wang, who has secured a
tenure track position at Radford
University in Virginia.
Albers
Admits Visit Costco
On April
11th over 100 high school students
admitted to Albers as freshmen next year
and their parents visited Costco
Wholesale for lunch. They met with
Jim Sinegal and other Costco leaders
and learned more about the Costco story
and SU.
Undergrad Networking Event
On April
2nd the Albers Placement Center
sponsored a networking event for
undergraduate seniors. Students mingled
with advisory board members, mentors,
and alums. Prior to the event,
representatives of Enterprise Rent-a-car
presented a workshop on networking.

Lecture
Nearly 50
students and industry professionals
gathered for the Thomas Gleed Endowed
Chair Lecture on April 11th. David
Reid presented on, "Protecting
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in
China: What to do? How to do it?"
Two
Seniors Selected for CBYX
Albers
seniors Senay Kahsay and
Kendra Borja have been selected to
participate in the Congress-Bundestag
Youth Exchange (CBYX) program for young
professionals. The CBYX program is a
highly selective, German exchange
scholarship program intended primarily
for young adults in business, technical,
vocational, and agricultural fields.
Only 75 Americans are selected each
year. The 12-month program begins in
late July, and consists of two months of
intensive German language training in
Germany, four months of classroom
instruction at a German University or
College of Applied Sciences, and a
five-month internship in their career
field.

Luncheon
On Monday,
April 28th, Albers and the College of
Business at Gonzaga University are
hosting a luncheon at the Sheraton Hotel
in Seattle. The event features John

Leo Simpson's co-authored article, "Creating

and Higher Education. A second
article, "The Use of Student Consulting
Projects as an Active Learning Pedagogy:
A Case Study in a Production/ Operations
Management Course," has been accepted
for publication in the Decision
Sciences Journal of Innovative Education.
The American Economic Review has
accepted Brian Kelly's comment for publication,
"Antidumping Investigations and the Pass
Through of Antidumping Duties and
Exchange Rates: Comment." AER is the top
journal in the economics discipline.
Brian has had two other articles
accepted for publication – "The Law and
Economics of Simultaneous Countervailing
Duty and Antidumping Duty Proceedings,"
for publication in the Global Trade
and Customs Journal, and "The
Treatment of Profit in the Export Market
in Antidumping Duty Proceedings," in the
Journal of World Trade.
Katia Emm's paper, "Choices and Best Practices in
Corporate Risk Management Disclosure,"
was accepted for publication in the
Journal of Applied Corporate Finance.
Tom Captain, a member of
the Dean’s Executive Advisory Board,
recently published an article in US
Industry Today, entitled "It’s Your
Call: Flights of Fancy." The article
discusses China’s plans to build large
