Graduate Leadership Formation Certificate (GLFC)

Purpose

To offer interested and qualified students a special opportunity to explore leadership issues, develop and hone leadership skills, and practice leadership behaviors in the spirit of Seattle University’s commitment to promote a more just and humane world.

Program Description

An Albers School of Business and Economics Leadership Formation Certificate will be granted to students upon successful completion of 12 quarter credits of program requirements. Participating students must complete a specific body of coursework, satisfy community service requirements, and successfully lead a project involving other students in order to achieve the certificate. The program will be limited to 24 students per year and will be launched Fall Quarter, 2008.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible candidates will be of good standing in the Albers School in the MBA, MIB, or MPAC programs. Selection criteria will include a written statement of interest, a portfolio of service and leadership achievements, demonstrated ability to succeed in the program, and a group interview. Content

Total of 12 electives credits

A. Coursework

Participants in the GLFC will take a minimum of 2 courses (6 quarter credits) from the following list of electives:

  • MGMT 571 Adventure-Based Leadership Seminar
  • MGMT 575 Leading with Emotional Intelligence
  • MGMT 582 Extraordinary Leaders
  • MGMT 587 CEO Leadership and Board of Directors

B. Leadership Formation Seminar (MGMT 566 and MGMT 567)
Participants will participate in a two-course seminar (6 quarter credits) specially designed and directed for students in the cohort. Fall 2008, MGMT 566 (3 credits) with ongoing projects in Winter 2009, and Spring 2009, MGMT 567 (3 credits). The ongoing seminar will provide a forum for participants to explore, process, assimilate, and master aspects of leadership theory and behavior. Participants will engage in leadership book discussions, attend leadership speaker events and conferences, and will plan, lead, and implement service initiatives. Practicum modules will include:

  1. Social Justice Framework for Leadership
  2. Setting Direction: Creating a compelling vision, leading strategically, engaging stakeholders, developing decision-making abilities and approaches
  3. Confident Communication: Establishing practical and effective skills in speaking and writing, artful use of persuasion and influence
  4. People Skills: Cultivating outstanding skills in leading with dignity, understanding people, and maximizing the strength found in difference
