First day Assignment

I. Read Chapters 1, 2 pages 406-9 of the text, Macroeconomics, by R. Miller and D. VanHoose, (2004, 3rd ed./South-Western).

Homework: Ch 1: Problems: 1, 3, 4
Ch 2: Problems: 1, 2
(These can be handed in the following week. )

II. Read the Testimony of Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke, in the Federal Reserve Board's semiannual "Outlook for the U.S. Economy" report to the Congress, April 27, 2006. That testimony can be found at

  1. Identify 5-10 macroeconomic variables cited in this article.
  2. What factors were identified as restraining inflation pressures? 
  3. What factors pose risks for the U.S. economy in the near term?
  4. What are the long-term challenges facing the economy?
