Biographical Information:
Joseph M. Phillips was appointed Dean
of the Albers School of Business and
Economics July 1, 2001. He joined
Seattle University after serving on the
faculty of the College of Business
Administration at Creighton University.
He started at Creighton in 1982, serving
as Associate Dean for the last four and
half years.
Phillips graduated with a B.A. in
economics from LaSalle University and
received his M.A. and Ph.D. from the
University of Notre Dame. He teaches
primarily in the areas of money and
banking and economic development. In
1986 he received the Robert F. Kennedy
Award for Teaching Excellence, the
university’s highest teaching award.
Dr. Phillips has published a number
of articles in professional journals,
including the Southern Economic
Journal, Economic Development and
Cultural Change, Economic
Development Quarterly, Land
Economics, Economics of Education
Review, Quarterly Review of
Economics and Finance, Growth and
Change, Journal of Insurance
Issues and Practices, Journal of
Business and Economic Studies,
Review of Urban and Regional Development
Studies, Review of Regional
Studies, Journal of Labor
Research, and the International
Economic Journal. He has also
co-edited On the Condition of Labor
and the Social Question One Hundred
Years Later, published by Edward
Mellen Press.
Phillips is on the board of directors
of EvergreenBank, where he serves on the
bank’s audit committee. Between 1989 and
2006, he served for 15 years as an
outside director of the board of
directors of Farm Credit Services of
America (FCSA), an agricultural lender
in the Farm Credit System, and was the
first person appointed to that role.
Phillips also served on the Board of
Directors of the Creighton Federal
Credit Union from 1996 to 2001. As
Treasurer, he was a member of the board
executive committee and formerly chaired
the credit union’s Supervisory
Committee. In 2001, he received the
credit union’s Distinguished Service
Award. Phillips also has served as
parish president of Holy Family Catholic
Church in Omaha, NE, on the Board of
Trustees of Eastside Catholic High
School in Bellevue, WA, and on the board
of the Accounting Career Awareness
Program. Phillips currently serves on
the Board of Directors of Junior
Achievement of Greater Puget Sound.
He serves as President Emeritus of
the Western Association of Collegiate
Schools of Business, having previously
served as President and Vice
President-Program Chair. He is also past
president of the American Jesuit
Colleges and Universities Business
School Dean’s group.
His wife, Mary Sebek, is a dentist,
and they have three children – Michael
(20), Lizzy (18), and Greg (17).
