About Albers

Albers Mentor Program
Participating Mentors 2007-2008

Mr. Joe Hueffed

HR Systems SAP Application Developer
Starbucks Coffee Company

Industry:  Retail/HR Information Systems

Description of Company:

I work at the Starbucks Support Center in Seattle which is the corporate world headquarters for Starbucks Coffee Company.

Starbucks is a fairly progressive company and is an extremely fun and rewarding place to work. Starbucks has enthusiastically supported the SU mentor program.

Areas of Responsibility - Job Description:

While attending Seattle University I worked for Starbucks in a retail role. Since graduating I have worked at the Starbucks Support Center in a range of information systems positions. I have primarily worked with retail POS systems and HR systems, including SAP. My specialization is in developing database applications and reports using SQL Server, Visual Basic, C / C++ and SAP. Although I develop code, I am more of a business systems analyst than a pure IT technology developer.
Students interested in business systems analysis, particularly in a retail or HR environment, would gain the most from working with me.

Areas of Expertise - Employment History:

1995 --> 1998 Starbucks Retail Stores
1998 --> 2006 Starbucks HR & Retail Business Systems development
2006 --> present: HR systems / SAP development

Education - Personal History:

Undergraduate --> BA Humanities & Economics, Seattle University, 1993
Graduate --> MBA, Seattle University, 1998

Any special topic or expertise you'd like to concentrate on this year?:

Some of the activities that I have planned for this year include:
- A tour of the Starbucks IT data center.
- Mock interviews and training with HR recruiters.
- Coffee tastings with Starbucks partners from the green coffee department.
- Coffee with Starbucks executives.
- Attend an actual coffee roasting at the Starbucks Support Center
- And much more! I generally plan to meet with students at least once per month.

When and where do you hold meetings with students?

I can meet anywhere in the greater Seattle / Bellevue area.

Any special requirements for students for the first meeting?

Please prepare a resume and a concise written description of your current career goals and interests.

Additional comments:

Students should know that I am in an analyst role rather than a management or executive role. Because of this, I am not in a position to directly hire anyone and I have been out of school less than 10 years. However, students who worked with me last year felt that I was very understanding and useful as a "peer" in addition to being a mentor.
I am also an alumni of Seattle U and can closely relate to the challenges and concerns of the students. Having worked for Starbucks for over 10 years, I have several contacts here and will do my best to make the resources of Starbucks available and accessible to you.

Mentor since Fall 2005
Will mentor graduate or undergraduate students
