About Albers

Who should do an Internship?

Any business students who either do not have work experience or whose work experience is not in the field they hope to get into after graduation.

Why do an Internship?

  • An Internship is an opportunity to work in a Seattle area business, agency or organization before finishing college.

  • It allows you to gain practical experience in what you hope to do after graduation.

  • It also allows you to find out about a company's culture and if your values are compatible to determine if you would like to work there in the future.

  • It allows you to meet the decision makers who may influence or assist your future career choices.

What would I do during an Internship?

Students work along side the professionals at the business and are mentored by supervisors. Often students are assigned to work on special projects that allow them to put into practice the concepts and theory learned in the classroom. The level of responsibility they enjoy as an intern surprises many students. This opportunity offers much more than a work-study position or part-time job.

What is done during an internship will vary based on the amount of experience you bring to the internship, and your willingness to take on added responsibilities. The assignments vary from internship to internship, but you are encouraged to take on more challenges and responsibilities with each new internship.

When should I do an Internship?

It is strongly recommended that ALL students complete at least one internship prior to graduation. Most internships are available to juniors, seniors, and Graduate students who have completed two or more quarters of their programs. Internships may be taken for academic credit, but to do so requires that you apply for the credit BEFORE the start of the quarter. Undergraduate credits earned for internships do not meet Business School requirements, but may be used to fulfill general university elective credits.

*Please note: Most internships will not be available to you after you graduate.

Here's what other students have said about their internships:

"It helped me focus on the kind of job to look for after graduation."

"It let me see how the various parts of marketing fit together. I also learned what I liked and didn't like to do."

How do I find an Internship?

Plan early and start early. Be sure that you have a resume and are ready to apply as some internships are only open for a very short time. Internships with some of the larger employers are recruited for very early in the year, so investigate the hiring process of the companies where you are most interested in interning.

1. To find out which companies advertise internships at Seattle University, use the e-Recruiting system. Log on at: http://seattleu.erecruiting.com and you will be able to search the internship listings. Once you have found an internship that you are interested in, you will need to apply directly to the employer with either a resume or application form.

2. Identify other employers where you would like to work. Contact the employer directly or through your personal contacts to inquire about potential internships. Many employers throughout the country list their internships on their web sites.

3. Make an appointment with a counselor in the APC to receive advice on your internship search by calling 206.296.5687.

INTERNSHIPS FOR ACADEMIC CREDIT

How do I register for credit?

  • If you wish to do the internship for academic credit, please meet with an APC Staff member and your Academic Advisor first.  You can pick up an Internship For Credit packet from the APC, or online at the link below. You will also need an Internship Request Form available in our office or at the Registrar.

  • You cannot apply through SUOnline. You will obtain the signatures needed and deliver the form to the Registrar.

Keep in mind that you should make all arrangements to apply for the credits, prior to the start of the quarter. It is against policy to grant academic credit for work already completed. Also, you cannot apply for internship credit for your part-time job.

What are the credit and time commitments?

Undergraduate: May earn one (1) or a maximum of five (5) credits over one or two quarters. A one to three credit commitment requires a minimum of ten hours a week or an accumulative of 100 hours in a quarter. For four or five credits, 15 hours a week or 150 hours minimum commitment during the quarter. The maximum number of credits you can earn from internship is five (5) credits.

(If you are working on your 5th year for CPA exam requirements, please talk with your advisor.)

Graduate: May take one quarter of internship for one - three (3) credits. Time commitment is 100 - 150 hours.
