Professional History:
Donald B.
Summers has over 30 years of experience
at the highest levels of management in
both Human Resources and strategic
planning. Throughout his career he has
helped senior management understand the
critical link between business strategy
and the use of corporate resources,
especially people. He specializes his
consulting on strategic and transition
planning, direction setting, change
management, people systems, coaching,
and leadership.
Prior to
forming The Meridian Consulting Group,
Inc., he was Senior Vice President and
Manager of Human Resources and Social
Policy at Security Pacific Bank
Washington in Seattle, Washington
(formerly Rainier Bank.
At the
company, which was listed in the “The
100 Best Companies to Work for in
America,” he brought a business
orientation to a wide range of issues.
They included merging Rainier Bank into
Security Pacific Corporation, increasing
diversity among employees and
management, after-school care, and a
pay-for-performance strategy.
Before
joining Rainier Bank, he was Vice
President of Human Resources for Delmed,
Inc., a high-tech medical products and
services firm. Previous to that he was
Vice President of Personnel Services at
Bank of Boston.
He wrote
the book "Personnel Management in
Banking" (McGraw-Hill) – and has
published numerous articles on HR,
leadership, coaching and organizational
development. He currently teaches in the
MBA programs at Seattle University and
Seattle Pacific University. He was a
fellow at the Center for Integrity in
Business at Seattle Pacific University
(2003/2005).
He served
as project manager for the Grace
Commission in Washington, D.C. His team
examined the U.S. Department of
Education and recommended more than 60
changes saving $3 billion.
He earned
his undergraduate degree from the
University of Michigan and his master’s
and doctorate from Boston University. In
1999 he was awarded a certificate of
recognition by NASA.
Recently he
was presented the “Adjunct Teacher of
the Year (2005/2006)” award by Seattle
Pacific University. He is currently
serving as a Visiting Faculty in
Management at the University of
Washington, Tacoma, for 2006/2007.
