Strategic Communications

Learning Outcomes

  • Undergraduate Communication Department students should be able to:

    • Understand and apply theories and principles of rhetoric, interpersonal communication, and mediated communication to communicate effectively in written, spoken, and other forms
    • Understand the legal, ethical, personal and social responsibilities of communicators
    • Identify interesting communication research questions, perform research, and produce academic writing of a standard suitable for target academic journals
    • Effectively engage in the practical application of communication skills and knowledge
     In addition, Strategic Communication students should be able to: 
    • Understand and effectively apply lessons from the history, structure and social impact of the strategic communications profession
    • Understand and effectively apply strategic communications planning processes, problem-solving strategies and operational techniques
    • Demonstrate creative ability to communicate in ways that audiences will pay attention to, understand, believe, remember and act on
    • In major Strategic Communication projects for actual or imagined clients, effectively apply current communication and media technologies to address clients’ problems related to marketing, advocacy and/or reputation management
