Biography

David V. Powers, Ph.D., is the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a Professor of Psychology at Seattle University.

He served as Professor and Chair of the Psychology Department at Loyola University in Maryland, where he was a faculty member from 1997 - 2009, and as President of the Epsilon of Maryland chapter of Phi Beta Kappa from 2004 - 2009.

He served as President of the Society for Clinical Geropsychology from 2010 to 2012, and is a member of Psychologists in Long Term Care. Dr. Powers served as the representative for both the American Psychological Association and Psychologists in Long Term Care to the National Coalition for Mental Health and Aging, and was a founding member of the APA/ABA Assessment of Capacity in Older Adults Joint Working Group. He also served as the Aging Special Interest Group (SIG) Leader for the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy, and as the APA Liaison to the Commission on Law and Aging of the American Bar Association. Dr. Powers worked in part time private practice with Comprehensive Geriatric Services in Towson, Maryland from 1998 – 2002.

Dr. Powers is on the Executive Committee of Liberal Arts Education in Washington and is a member of the Program Committee of Humanities Washington.

He received his B.S. from Louisiana State University, his Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, completed internship at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, and held a postdoctoral fellowship in gerontology at Stanford University School of Medicine from 1995 – 1997. His scholarly publications and clinical practice include work in the areas of psychotherapy in older adults, Alzheimer’s care giving, and mental health advocacy.
