James Risser is Professor of Philosophy at Seattle University. He received his doctorate from Dusquesne University in 1978 and joined Seattle University in 1979. Dr. Risser specializes in contemporary Continental philosophy, particularly the philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer. He has published on a variety of thinkers, including Kant, Heidegger, Nietzsche, and Derrida. Since 1999 he has served as Secretary-Treasurer for the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy. Dr. Risser's teaching has included courses in Greek philosophy, 19th- and 20th-century philosophy, ethics, and aesthetics.
