Ten Web sites All Nonprofits Could Use

April 2003

  1. The Foundation Center: www.foundationcenter.org
    This site provides information about every foundation in the country. Much of this information is free, but some of it is for paying subscribers only.
  2. Guidestar: www.guidestar.org
    This site lists financial information for 800,000 nonprofits. You can use Guidestar for research, and you can also update your organization's entry there.
  3. Idealist: www.idealist.org
    Idealist.org has built the leading nonprofit job site in the country. In addition to jobs, you can also list events, volunteer opportunities and internships, and at www.idealist.org/consultants you can find the most comprehensive directory of nonprofit consultants on the Web.
  4. Nonprofit Online News: news.gilbert.org
    Michael Gilbert maintains a great site with daily news updates bridging the online and nonprofit worlds. You can read the news there, or you can subscribe for weekly email updates.
  5. The Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership: www.nonprofitbasics.org
    They are building a resource center with lots of great information for starting, running and funding an organization.
  6. Internet Nonprofit Center: www.nonprofits.org/npofaq
    Putnam Barber maintains the Nonprofit FAQ - an older resource center that is special because it is based on actual questions and answers posted by nonprofit managers over the years.
  7. Network for Good: www.networkforgood.org
    At this site people can find volunteer opportunities, and they can also make donations to hundreds of thousands of nonprofits. Most importantly, you can use this site to add a free Donate button to your Web site.
  8. Service Leader: www.serviceleader.org
    You will find a huge site covering every aspect of volunteer management, from screening, matching, record-keeping and evaluation, to legal issues, risk management and virtual volunteering.
  9. Techsoup: www.techsoup.org
    This is the leading resource center for all issues related to nonprofit technology. In addition, they offer steep discounts on software for nonprofits, sometimes up to 90% off the list price.
  10. Volunteer Match: www.volunteermatch.org
    People can find volunteer opportunities all over the country by ZIP code or area of interest.

Lastly, in addition to these 10 online resources, we recommend that people check out the National Council of Nonprofit Associations for the nonprofit state association closest to them.

  1. Alliance for Nonprofit Management: www.allianceonline.org
    This site focuses on strengthening leadership and fostering inclusiveness and collaboration. The Alliance Resource Center is dedicated to building and transferring knowledge related to nonprofit management and governance.
  2. Association for Volunteer Administration: www.avaintl.org
    This site contains a vast array of information relating to many aspects of mobilizing and managing volunteers.
  3. BoardSource: www.boardsource.org
    Formerly known as the National Center for Nonprofit Boards, this web site is one of the premier sources of information on board related issues. It also provides publications useful to board members.
  4. The Charity Channel: www.charitychannel.com
    This Canadian site has many features useful to managers of volunteers or those involved with nonprofit boards. This includes an extensive library, e-newsletters designed for different countries (including the USA) and several free discussion groups.
  5. Charity Village: www.charityvillage.com
    Canada's supersite for the nonprofit sector has many resources for executives, staff and volunteers.
  6. CompassPoint Nonprofit Services: www.compasspoint.org
    This is the site of a San Francisco based management support organization that is noted for the quality of its research and information on best practices. It has an extensive on-line library on topics related to board and volunteer services and also offers a free on-line newsletter for board members called “BoardCafe.”
  7. Court Appointed Special Advocates:
    www.casanet.org/training/index.htm
    This site is sponsored by the national CASA office and has a sections especially designed for tips on how to recruit and manage volunteers. The information is useful to all types of nonprofits.
  8. Electronic Gazette for Volunteerism: www.volunteertoday.com
    Examples of topics covered include boards and committees, other Internet resources, training opportunities and tips on recruiting and retention.
  9. Energize Inc.: www.energizeinc.com
    An international training, consulting and publishing firm that specializes in volunteerism. The site provides access to an extensive range of nonprofit-related articles.
  10. Free Management Library: www.managementhelp.org
    Hosted by the Management Assistance Program for Nonprofits, St. Paul, the Library has over seventy topic areas in this integrated site. Each topic includes helpful articles, as well as links to other relevant websites.
  11. Help for Nonprofits & Tribes: www.help4nonprofits.com
    Offers a useful monthly e-mail and resource library and also contains information on nonprofits in Tribal communities.
  12. Independent Sector: www.independentsector.org
    Contains the latest national data on giving and volunteering.
  13. Minnesota Council of Nonprofits: www.mncn.org
    The Information Central section of this website contains extensive information on governance, including a monthly featured article, FAQ’s, the basics, and templates and samples.
  14. National School Boards Association: www.nsba.org/sbot/toolkit/PandLDev.html
    The Professional and Leadership Development portion of the site will provide you guidance on identifying developing your leadership styles and responsibilities. The Team Climate Survey can be downloaded without cost and used to assess the strengths and weaknesses of a governance team.
  15. The Nonprofit Center: www.nonprofitcenter.com
    This site contains extensive information in its management tools section about boards and leadership. Topics include: “12 Weeks To a Better Board” and “What To Ask BEFORE Accepting a Seat.”
  16. The Nonprofit Management Education Center Learner Resource Center:
    www.uwex.edu/li/learner/library.htm
    A source of sixteen nonprofit link categories including board governance and volunteer management.
  17. Nonprofit Good Practice Guide: www.npgoodpractice.org
    The Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership provides key information designed to help manage your nonprofit organization efficiently and effectively.
  18. Nonprofit Sector Research Fund: www.nonprofitresearch.org
    This organization funds research on nonprofit issues, including volunteerism and governance. The site gives a good overview of the research findings, as well as providing the opportunity to order the full publications.
  19. Points of Light Foundation: www.pointsoflight.org
    Established in 1990, this organization offers an extensive on-line library as well as inspirational stories about individual volunteers that have made a difference.
  20. Volunteer Consulting Group: www.vcg.org
    Although this site is maintained by a commercial consulting group, it does offer access to a number of interesting articles on board and volunteer issues (particularly helpful are some of the discussions on issues of diversity).
