Training Modules
Complete presentation packages, prepared by the Faculty and participants of the Executive Master of Nonprofit Leadership program at Seattle University, are provided below in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Each package comes complete with a script, originals for hand-outs and ready-to-use transparencies.
The presentation text is based on the curriculum of the Executive Master of Nonprofit Leadership program at Seattle University. The subjects were chosen by the faculty in consultation with alumni and current students. The topics focus on strengthening key factors for success in nonprofit organizations. There is no charge. Cooperation with the evaluation process is expected.

Creating a Culture of Healthy Dissent

This training module was developed in the Master of Not-for-Profit Leadership Program (MNPL) at Seattle University.
Boards should establish norms to create board meetings where rich dialogue, healthy dissent, and quality decision-making prevail.

Identifying Core Values

This training module was developed in the Master of Not-for-Profit Leadership Program (MNPL) at Seattle University. One of the goals for the MNPL program is to strengthen and enhance nonprofit board and organizational effectiveness. In progress towards that goal, six graduate students designed this module, Understanding Core Values A guide for your organization.
At the completion of this training module the participants will be able to:
- Facilitate a discussion about core values.
- Design a collaborative process to help an organization identify its core values.
- Choose and administer tools to help identify both personal and organizational core values.
- Discuss ways to communicate core values
- Discuss ways to evaluate core value effectiveness in the organization.

Improving Nonprofit Boards I

For board members; approximately 1 hour.
GOAL: To help members of a not-for-profit board examine how they can add more value to organizations they govern.
- Identify several ways nonprofit boards can improve their effectiveness
- Identify and describe essential characteristics of highly performing nonprofit boards
- Provide an opportunity for the board to collect data to assess its own performance
- Agree on one way to improve future board performance given the results of a self-assessment of their board's current performance.

Nonprofit Policy Advocacy I: Getting Started

Goal: To encourage nonprofits to advocate effectively for sound public policies. This presentation (Part 1) focuses on what advocacy is, why it is important, and how to choose issues. The companion presentation
Outcomes: At the completion of Part 1, participants will be able to:
- Identify a wide range of advocacy activities in which this organization might want to engage
- Identify at least three public policies and issues that affect the mission, organization and customers
- Articulate the benefits and costs of advocating for sound public policies; and
- Understand factors to consider when selecting policy issues to advocate.

Nonprofit Policy Advocacy II: How to Advocate Effectively

Goal: To encourage nonprofits to advocate effectively for sound public policies. This presentation (Part 2) focuses on strategies, tools, and basic information that can help advocates become more effective.
Outcomes: At the completion of Part 2, participants will be able to:
- List the basic elements of effective advocacy campaigns;
- Understand the basic IRS rules regarding lobbying; and
- Identify several practical ways to develop or improve their advocacy efforts

Outcome Based Evaluation

GOAL: To provide fundamental information about effective nonprofit evaluation.
- The fundamental concepts and terms utilized in outcome based evaluation
- The difference between using outputs and outcomes for evaluation purposes
- The basic steps of developing a logic model used in outcome based evaluation
- The value of using outcome based evaluation as a standardized management and governance tool for organizational planning and program evaluation

Strategic Planning

GOAL: To provide information on effective planning for nonprofit organizations.
- The value of strategic planning as a primary management and organizational leadership tool
- Key differences between long range and strategic plans
- Fundamental strategic planning concepts and terms
- The value of environmental scanning and of involving external stakeholders in a strategic planning process.
- Develop a stakeholder list for the organization.
