NPLR 315, Introduction to Nonprofit Leadership, is offered every fall, winter, and spring quarter, and a complement of two to three other Nonprofit Leadership classes are also offered every quarter. Below are course descriptions for all of the Nonprofit Leadership classes as listed in the Bulletin. Other special topics (e.g., Team Building, Social Marketing, International Nongovernmental Organizations) are offered regularly, so keep an eye on SUOnline for these exciting options!

NPLR 315                Introduction to the Nonprofit sector                       5 credits

An overview of the nonprofit sector, with particular emphasis on charitable (501c3) nonprofit organizations. Explores the scope and context of the sector, historical developments, management and leadership challenges, community-building roles, reform issues, and ethics.

NPLR 435                Nonprofit Planning and Evaluation                          5 credits

Principles of strategic, long-range, and tactical planning; linking evaluation to planning and determining program effectiveness.

NPLR 436                Nonprofit Financial Management                             5 credits

Planning, controlling, and reporting financial matters; budgeting; internal controls and audit issues; stewardship.

NPLR 437                Managing Nonprofit Volunteers                                5 credits

Recruiting, organizing, motivating, and retaining volunteers to provide governance, committee, and other support.

NPLR 438                Working with Nonprofit Staff                                     5 credits

Nonprofit aspects of personnel recruitment, management, motivation, and evaluation, including policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and best practices.

NPLR 443                Nonprofit Fundraising                                                 5 credits

Managing resource development and fundraising efforts in the nonprofit setting; techniques and strategies for cultivating and soliciting potential sources of financial support.

NPLR 444                Grant Writing                                                               5 credits

Planning and preparing proposals for philanthropic support of nonprofit programs and activities.

NPLR 448                Nonprofit Business Enterprise                                    5 credits

An examination of nonprofit entrepreneurship and social purpose business activity to enhance communities while operating with financial bottom-line.

NPLR 449                Community Planning and Leadership                           5 credits

Planning and implementation issues for community development, including citizen participation and the role of nonprofit organizations.

NPLR 450                Nonprofit Business-Government Partnerships            5 credits

An examination of collaborative efforts to address public issues. Prerequisite: NPLR 315
