NAWCHE Making Connections Conference 2008: Building Global Connections: Envisioning Women's Studies and Women's Issues in an International Context

NAWCHE Conference 1The National Association for Women in Catholic Higher Education (NAWCHE) held its ninth Making Connections conference at St. John's University, New York. NAWCHE encouraged participants to present their research interests through giving attention to a globalized lens. In particular, the theme for Making Connections IX was catalyzed out of a goal, articulated by NAWCHE Director Sharlene Hesse-Biber, to "... bring together administrators, faculty and students and leading figures outside academia to address the international nature of violence against women; examine cultural ideologies that serve to oppress as well as empower women's lives across the globe; and present a range of activism initiatives in the service of social justice.

NAWCHE Conferences 2Led collaboratively by former NAWCHE Marketing Manager, Erin Balleine, former NAWCHE Program Manager, Emily Barko, and Hesse-Biber, in tandem with the St. John's conference committee steered by Barbara Koziak and Cathy Lancellotti, NAWCHE was able to present one of its most electrifying conferences yet, which this year not only granted a luxury of resources and networking opportunities in the heart of New York City's Manhattan, but in addition, offered a dinner cruise boat along the Hudson River, where our Friday night featured speaker event took place.
