SADL 500 - Research Methods in Sport Management - 3 Credits
After successful completion of this course, students will be able to use research to solve problems for entities or organizations. Specifically, students will be able to identify a problem, analyze the situation, suggest a research question, gather relevant information, interpret the information, and propose a solution.
SADL 502 - Social-cultural Basis for Sport - 3 creditsAfter successful completion of this course, students will be able to analyze the structure of sport based on sociological theories and how sport functions in modern industrialized society, specifically its relationship to religious and economic systems. In addition, be able to analyze sport as a social construction in regard to its role, structure, formal organization, and professionalization; stratification, differentiation and norms along social class, age, race, ableism and gender. Through sociological concepts students will be able to articulate the complexity of many issues that are affecting contemporary sport by thinking critically about how issues came to exist and how they continue to exist.
SADL 504 - Legal Issues in Sport - 3 creditsAfter successful completion of this course, students will be able to understand fundamental legal concepts relevant to tort law, contract law, and constitutional law; identify potential liability situations in the supervision, management and conduct of sport, recreation and physical activity (including situations regarding discrimination in terms of race, sex, and disability); and design and develop strategies for limiting liability.
SADL 505 - Financing Sport Organizations - 3 creditsAfter successful completion of this course, students will be able to calculate profits and losses for sport organizations; track and graph financial trends of revenues and expenses; analyze revenues after factoring in inflation costs to determine adjusted profits or losses; and determine, evaluate, and report causes for trends and anomalies in the above. Students will be able to analyze financial value of sport franchises; evaluate revenue categories to determine viability; and analyze and discuss impact of collective bargaining agreements on financial value of franchises.
SADL 506 - Strategic Marketing for Sport Organizations - 3 CreditsAfter successful completion of this course, students will be able to develop a sound philosophy of marketing; understand the evolution of sport marketing theories; identify the major theories related to consumer behavior and market segmentation; identify contemporary issues and trends in sport marketing; increase competence of scientific inquiry in sport marketing; and create a marketing plan for a sport organization. Prerequisite: SADL 514.
SADL 507 - Sports Media, Social Networking and Brand Communication - 3 CreditsAfter successful completion of this course, students will be able to explain the role of print media (newspapers and magazines), electronic (radio, network television and cable television) and new media (Internet and related digital and social interactive technologies) in escalating the interest, coverage, and importance of big-time college and professional sport, as well as niche-market sport. Students will be able to define the roles of media planners, producers, sports information directors, sports journalists, and specialized media-related companies dedicated to marketing, producing, and disseminating commercialized sport in North American and global contexts. Prerequisite: SADL 506.
SADL 508 - Sport Operations and Event Management - 3 Credits
After successful completion of this course, students will be able to manage sport programs and events; identify characteristics of an effective organization; design practical management strategies; formulate effective communication processes; supervise personnel; and establish logistical plans including, site or equipment layouts, schedules and time lines, electronic communications and information systems, procedures for hospitality, housing, registration, transportation and financial disbursement, traffic flow and parking, restroom and waste facilities, and liaison with reporting and broadcast media, governing bodies, vendors, concessions, planning committees, and volunteers. Students will organize and host a sport-related event to raise money for persons in need in the Seattle area. Prerequisites: SADL 518 & SADL 519.
SADL 510 - Managing Human Resources in Sport Organizations - 3 Credits
After successful completion of this course, students will be able to develop a dynamic organizational culture through recruiting and selecting, orienting and training, evaluating and rewarding sport personnel. Students will be able to write job descriptions, conduct performance evaluations, demonstrate interpersonal communications, manage change, maintain positive morale, manage difficult employees, develop a system of rewards, manage stress, create diversity, and develop a collaborative/participative management style. Prerequisite: SADL 515.
SADL 511- Sport Philosophy and Ethics - 3 Credits
After successful completion of this course, students will be able to discourse intelligently about major issues in philosophy of sport, such as: What is sport? Is it at base a type of play? How does the pursuit of victory or the pursuit of bodily excellence affect the nature of athletic activity? What exactly is sportsmanship? Students will read some of the major authors in contemporary philosophy of sport and will be encouraged to state and defend an argument regarding their own view of philosophy of sport and sport ethics.
SADL 512 - Developing Leadership in Sport - 3 Credits
After successful completion of this course, students will be able to evaluate leadership theories from historical and contemporary perspectives; analyze leadership styles from the most frequently used perspectives in business; investigate contemporary thinking on leadership and how leadership roles are changing in the 21st century; identify ways leadership in sport organizations can positively affect local and regional communities; develop leadership models for effective organizations; and formulate a personal and professional growth plan as a sport leader.
SADL 514 - Sport Consumer Behavior - 3 Credits
After successful completion of this course, students will be able to explain and delineate theories relevant to sport spectator behavior; apply the theories and research paradigms to develop and evaluate marketing reports; and create a consumer marketing report that provides a synopsis and recommendations for a sport organization. Specifically the student will analyze fan socialization, market segmentation, culture and sub-culture markets, personal values and goals, motivation, personality, decision making, constraints, market demand, confirmation/disconfirmation of expectancies, BIRGing and CORFing, and loyalty. Prerequisite: SADL 500.
SADL 515 - Sport Organizations – A Systems Perspective - 3 Credits
After successful completion of this course, students will be able to evaluate organizational theories related to sport organizations; understand systems within organizations such as organizational structure, culture, politics, and power both within the organization, and with external stakeholders; and use skills to improve organizational relationships and enhance performance within sport organizations. Students will be able to understand complex webs of relationships at the local and global levels in order to be a more effective leader among various constituencies. Prerequisite: SADL 512.
SADL 516 - Sport Promotion and Sponsorship - 3 Credits
After successful completion of this course, students will be able to analyze the theoretical foundations for promotions and sales; create a sponsorship proposal with the understanding of the necessity of matching target markets; create media and promotion plans; and measure the impact of sponsorship. Prerequisites: SADL 505, 506. Majors Only.
SADL 517 - Measurement and Evaluation in Sport Management - 3 Credits
After successful completion of this course, students will be able to determine which appropriate statistical procedures to use based on the situation; determine psychometric properties of measurement instruments; create, interpret and discuss descriptive results; create, interpret and discuss relational results; create, interpret and discuss group comparison results; and provide a written report based on the interpretation of the data. Prerequisite: SADL 500.
SADL 518 - Sport Event Planning - 1 Credit
After successful completion of this course students will be able to identify and understand traditional and niche sport, recreation and tourism events; develop planning documents for an event, which include selection of event, developing objectives, strategies, and tactics, selection of venue and preliminary budget including anticipated revenue and costs.. Prerequisite: SADL 506.
SADL 519 - Sport Event Design - 2 Credits
After successful completion of this course students will be able to understand and create the operational plan for a sport event, which includes developing marketing and sponsorship strategies, media strategies; developing timelines, schedules and responsibilities for activities leading up to and through the event. The timelines, schedules and responsibilities include communication and information systems, transportation and traffic flow, hospitality, personnel, registration, finances, restroom and waste facilities. Prerequisite: SADL 518.
SADL 589 - Project and Colloquium – Applied Inquiry Option - 3 Credits
After successful completion of this endeavor, students will have acted as an outside consultant for a sport organization. Specifically the student will have evaluated at least four aspects of a sport organization and created documents analyzing each of the four aspects. Each evaluation is supported by appropriate theoretical rationale, an analysis of the aspect, and specific recommendations for the organization on how to improve the aspect. The recommendations are presented to the sport organization and a synthesis and synopsis of the documents is presented orally and in writing. Prerequisites: SADL 500, a minimum of 36 credits toward the MSAL degree.
SADL 590 - Project and Colloquium – Research Option - 3 Credits
After successful completion of this endeavor, students will have designed, implemented, and presented both orally and in writing, an original research project. Specifically, the student will have delineated a research topic; conducted a comprehensive review of the literature; developed appropriate methodology for investigating a topic; collected and analyzed data; interpreted the results and made recommendations. The course serves as a culminating activity via a manuscript and an oral presentation. Prerequisites: SADL 500, a minimum of 36 credits toward the MSAL degree, a quantitative statistics class (such as SADL 517) or a qualitative statistics class.
SADL 591-593 - Special Topics - 1 to 3 Credits
SADL 595 - Internship - 1 to 9 Credits
After successful completion of this internship, students will have had a leadership opportunity through assigned work experience. Assignments are arranged with local, national or international organizations and include all field specializations. Position descriptions are based on the needs of the cooperating organization. Work hours, calendar, remuneration and related benefits are negotiated. A supervisor/mentor serves as the author of specific assignments and participates in a final evaluation supported by journal and portfolio.
