What does it mean to be an “official” nonprofit and how are they governed? How do you know whether there is a need for that great socially-conscious project idea you have? What types of for-profit or not-for profit organizations might be a good fit for what you’d like to accomplish? We will explore these questions and more in this latest installment of Seattle University’s Leadership for Social Good Series, co-sponsored by the Access to Justice Institute and the Institute of Public Service.

Through a highly interactive panel discussion with nonprofit and social entrepreneurial leaders from the local community, this event will highlight different organizational models available to those starting social endeavors, share some nuts and bolts about creating and maintaining those organizations according to state and federal law, and emphasize the ingredients that are necessary to build an effective new organization from the start, such as needs assessments, business planning, good fundraising, and outcome measurement techniques.

Speakers include Judy Andrews, nonprofit attorney and adviser and supervisor of the School of Law’s Not-for-Profit Organization Clinic; Sandrine Espie, a Seattle University MPA graduate and founder of Muses; Jaime Garcia, founder and Executive Director of Consejo Counseling & Referral Service; Megan McNally, Director of Advancement & Chief Development Officer for the Washington State Bar Association and SU Law Student; and Sheila O’Sullivan, Executive Director of the Northwest Consumer Law Center and Partner, Leen & O’Sullivan. Bring your questions and project ideas to workshop!
