 The MAP Mentorship Program...

is an opportunity for MAP alumni to support young professionals in their education and careers.  It pairs a current MAP student or recently graduated alumni with an experienced alumni for conversation, support, and advice on navigating graduate school and early professional life.  Students and new alumni have consistently expressed interest in hearing from program alumni about their experience as a graduate student and applying their MAP education after graduation, be it as a therapist or in some other role.  The mentor relationship is confidential.

How to become a mentor

Email us with the following information to be added to the list of available mentors :

  • Year graduated
  • Current job
  • Current location (city/state)
  • Licenses/certifications obtained (if any)
  • Brief (1-2 sentence) summary on the focus of your work.
  • Preference for mentoring either a current student, a recent graduate or both.
  • Contact information (business phone number and email address - will only be shared with the mentee)

This important program would not have become a reality without the very generous support of our MAP alumni.

Next steps

  • Our MAP Graduate Assistant will contact you when a student is interested in your mentorship. If you are available to mentor them at that time, you will be given the student’s SU email address. You will also be asked to confirm with us when you contact the student so we can keep track of mentors and make sure we do not overload any one alumnus.
  • Students and recent graduates will receive an electronic file containing the information supplied by the mentor with the exclusion of contact information.  There will be a hardcopy available at the front desk for them to review.
  • Those interested will look over the list and then contact their advisor to discuss their choice(s).  They will provide support for the student in choosing a mentor.  In the case of a recent graduate, they should contact the MAP Director first and then any other faculty they wish.
  • Once they settle on a couple of choices, they will contact the Graduate Assistant, and they will give let you know we have someone interested in working with you.  We will pass on the preferred contact information you supplied so they can contact you directly.
  • Mentors will contact the student directly and make arrangements to meet and discuss working together.

At this point MAP is out of the loop and your mentorship remains confidential.  We will only keep a record of who is matched with a mentor so as not to overload any one mentor.  We will ask the mentor to let us know when the mentee relationship concludes and ask for your feedback on the program once a year.

We are very excited about the MAP Mentorship Program.  From what we've heard from current students and alumni, this is a much welcome addition to our already excellent education.
