1. What are the first-year Chinese courses?

The first-year Chinese courses include CHIN115, CHIN125, CHIN135 which are offered during the regular school sessions.

CHIN115, CHIN125 and CHIN135 carry 5 credits each. These are three parts of a one-year study at the first-year level. CHIN115 is open to those who do not speake any Chinese, including Mandarin Chinese and other Chinese dialects. It is highly recommended that students finish the whole series in order to take advantage of the foundemental training to make worth their investment.

2. What about the textbooks used?

Currently both the first-year and second-year courses use "Integrated Chinese," a set of three books (textbook, workbook and character book). Some other textbooks and materials are also used by the courses to supplement the main textbook for the course.

3. I think I'm over-qualified for the CHI115-135 series, but I just want to get an "A" to increase my GPA, so can I take the CHI115/135 series anyway?

No, we recommend you choose your Chinese course based on the information provided here. If in doubt, please consult your instructor. Note that early diagnostic actions taken would prevent any disappointment and even academic jeopardy as might otherwise be caused.

4. What are the second-year Chinese coures?

The second-year Chinese courses include CHIN215, CHIN 225 and CHIN 235, which are the three parts of the second-year level (see Courses for detailed course descriptions). Students are encouraged to take all three in order to take full advantage of these content-rich and high credit-bearing courses.

5. Can I take lower number language courses after or while taking a higher number course?

        If you have already taken or are taking a higher number course, you can not take any lower number courses. This appplies to all language courses at the 100 through 300 levels currently.

6. Can I exampt the foreign language requirment by taking a Chinese language test?

        Yes, the test is normally administered one week before the class begins. Please contact the Chinese Program for the specific dates and times for the test.

 

7. Is there any technical support for the Chinese language course-related computing?

        Yes. It will be provided in class and posted here from time time.
