VACHON GALLERY

The Vachon Room in the Fine Arts Building was converted from a studio theatre to a dedicated gallery in 2009 and has since shown a mix of student, faculty, and guest artist exhibitions. Curated by Fine Arts faculty, this gallery has quickly emerged as a dynamic facility for artistic study and practice.  

In 2012-13, the Vachon Gallery will be curated collectively by the Visual Art faculty.  

LOCATION & HOURS:

The Vachon Gallery is located on the north end of campus in the Fine Arts Building, which backs up to Madison Street just east of Broadway. Check out a campus map. The gallery is open to the public Monday thru Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm (excluding University-observed holidays). Admission is always free.

Artist Lecture/Video Screening featuring Britta Johnson, Seattle based stop motion animator 6:00-7:00pm

Britta Johnson is a Seattle-based stop-motion animator. She makes video installations and short films, and has directed music videos for bands including Laura Veirs, Lusine, Andrew Bird, and Minus the Bear. Her projects and collaborations with musicians (Mirah and Spectratone Int'l, Robin Holcomb, etc.) have shown in venues including the Lawrimore Project, Bumbershoot, the Henry Art Gallery, Giant Magnet, the RedCat festival, the PICA's TBA festival, the Walker Art Center, MassMoCA, the Kennedy Center, and the Boston MFA. This past April, The Hover, a solo show of her large-scale animations filmed in Washington State's regional landscapes, was on display in Seattle's Gallery4Culture. Her website is www.thekmpi.net.  

Advanced Studio Exhibition

Visual Art students present a collection of their most recent work executed within the Advanced Studio Course. Students collectively curate the exhibition
under the mentorship of professor Franc Guerrero.

Seattle University Artist in Residence (SUVAIR) Mary Ann Peters

Seattle – Seattle University is pleased to announce the selection of Mary Ann Peter as the Seattle University Visual Artist in Residence for 2012.

The SUVAIR was formed to facilitate research and support for artists in their creative process.  This program is designed to foster a unique environment for artists and students from which new ideas emerge that can change the way we all see the world.  The residency will provide artists with the valuable resources of time and space for open-ended investigation, experimentation and collaboration. The program gives artists the opportunity to push the boundaries of their own practice.  This freedom sparks collaborations that promote new approaches to arts education, foster community building and provide a catalyst for social change.

The SUVAIR creates a forum for dialogue between the public and the artist in residence through an artist exhibition, artist talks, open studio time, and other forms of public programming and materials.  Our residency is housed within the Seattle University campus with full access to the university library and facilities.  The residency studio and offices are housed within two recently renovated buildings that once housed a streetcar turn-house.  The Seattle University Fine Arts buildings are within the vibrant and bustling Capitol Hill neighborhood.

Mary Ann brings to SU a depth of artistic experience, from her studio practice to her cultural and social activism in the arts.  Her work is collected nationally and internationally and is in multiple private and public settings in our region. She has traveled extensively and is an acknowledged coalition builder with her projects.  As a seasoned public speaker Mary Ann has been a voice for artists and institutions around a variety of subjects, most notably concerning First Amendment rights. Her tenure at SU coincides with the development of new work for an exhibition January 21st - March 1st in the Vachon Gallery.  Please join the Department of fine arts for an the opening reception in the Vachon Gallery located in the Fine Arts Building January 24th from 5:00-8:00 PM.

The Yesler Terrace Summer Youth Media Program Exhibition  

Featuring photography and video documenting Yesler Terrace and the redevelopment, this is a collaborative project with RecTech, The Multimedia Resources and Training Institute, Youth in Focus, and Seattle University.
