Video, photography, and performance artist Juniper Shuey, joins the faculty in the Fine Arts Department as a visiting artist for the spring quarter production of Mirabelle: A Breeze. Shuey is working with the Theatre program, creating projected visual effects to enhance the fantastical design of the musical fairy tale aimed at family audiences. Mirabelle: A Breeze plays at the Lee Center May 9-20.

Shuey is an emerging star in the international contemporary performance scene.  He is co-artistic director of zoe|juniper, collaborating with Zoe Scofield since 2005. They published a book of their photographic collaborations, White Teeth.  They have been awarded residencies at the Trafo House of Contemporary Art in Budapest, Hungary; the Arts Center in Corvallis, OR; MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, NH; and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in Becket, MA. They are currently preparing an appearance at the prestigious Spoleto Festival USA in June.

Shuey was recently commissioned by avant-garde composer Huang Ruo to create a video installation for his chamber quartet’s upcoming tour. Shuey has exhibited in United States and in Europe, including the Northwest Annual at Bellevue Art Museum (2001), and La Mostra in Palazzo Pio, Rome (2000). He received an Edge Grant from Artist Trust for advancement of his professional practices and the Marsh Scholarship for his work abroad in addition to the Curators' Choice Award from the Tacoma Art Museums Northwest Biennial 2004 and the People's Choice Award from the Bellevue Art Museums Northwest Annual 2001.
