Fine Arts Professor Gretchen Bennett is a featured artist in “The Rug Pulled Out from Underneath; You Lie on the Floor” now showing in the Hedreen Gallery. The show is part of a larger conversation with the current Seattle Art Museum exhibition “Elles: Women Artists from the Centre Pompidou, Paris.”
The exhibit includes painting, sculpture, video, photography, and print material. A special edition of La Norda Specialo, which features writings by artists and poets, accompanies the show. The exhibit was curated by artists Dawn Cerny and Shaw Osha.
With artworks that concern the figure and emotion, the exhibit aims to transfer the question of gender from the artist's body to the artwork.
"The show asks questions about how we, as makers and viewers, understand states of knowing, perceiving , and unknowing," said Bennett. Bennett teaches in the Studio Art program.
Bennett, who received her MFA from Rutgers University, has taught in the visual art program since 2009. She received an Artist Trust GAP Grant in 2009 and was awarded a Fulbright for study in Prague. Bennett has exhibited at the Seattle Art Museum as well as at galleries throughout the Pacific Northwest and in Iceland.
The College of Arts and Sciences, the largest college in Seattle University, offers 42 undergraduate majors, 37 minors, and 7 master’s degrees.
