Seattle University undergraduate Film Studies students should be able to:

  • Use the critical vocabulary of film studies to write and speak insightfully and with disciplinary authority about film art and culture.
  • Demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach to film study, using critical skills honed in the liberal arts to address philosophical and ethical issues raised by film as a popular cultural art form.
  • Acquire and apply knowledge of international and , in particular, non-western cinemas, as well as U.S. Ethnic cinemas, to the Jesuit mission commitment to social justice , first through disciplinary analyses of a wide range of  film texts, and second, through both research and film production projects that demonstrate a genuinely personal engagement with issues affecting the community.
  • Apply in critical papers and film production projects at each curricular level the knowledge and skills acquired in the foundational course in
film history, film analysis, film genres, visual storytelling, and international cinemas.
  • Demonstrate in 300-level film courses in Philosophy and Theology an ability to respond to complex questions of religious faith and spirituality, and in 400- level seminars, a self-reflective, critical skepticism about visual media and our image saturated culture.
  • Demonstrate learning through leadership and team work, in class, and in collaborative file production projects.
