Modern U.S. History
I am fairly new to Seattle, moving here four years ago when my wife took a job with Microsoft. I have a B.A. from Colorado College and I earned my M.A. & Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1998—all in history. Before coming to Seattle University I spent 8 years at Queens University of Charlotte in North Carolina as an Associate Professor running a small American Studies program and teaching southern history to southerners. As a boy who grew up in Chicago this was a particularly interesting pedagogical experiment. My research interests are on developing regional, comparative perspectives on crime and punishment in American history, especially on how the theories of prison reform contrast with the realities of incarceration. And recently I have been working on finding ways to fuse my research interests with the modern civilization and core classes that I have been teaching while here at Seattle University. I have two children who are, for the first time just this past week, both in school full time. I hardly know what to do with myself now that I don’t have the little ones to look after all the time. I guess this means I might actually have to get some work done!
