Detective Brian Stampfl is the supervisor of the Seattle
Police Department’s Crime Scene Investigations Unit (CSI). CSI is dedicated to the investigation of Major Crimes, which include homicides,
officer involved shootings, gang violence, sexual assaults, robberies, domestic
violence and crimes with complex crime scenes.
Detective Stampfl began his law enforcement career in 1991 where
he served in Southern California with the San Bernardino Police
Department. In 1995, he was hired by the
Seattle Police Department where he worked in patrol and was assigned to the
downtown corridor of Seattle. While in
patrol, Detective Stampfl became a field training officer (FTO), responsible
for training new officers who had just graduated from the academy. To further pursue his interest in teaching
and training, Detective Stampfl took a position with the Seattle-King County
Joint Academy where he served as an instructor and tactical officer.
In 2001, Detective Stampfl’s title changed from officer to
detective when he was assigned to the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit,
where he worked for over three years. Then
in 2004, the opportunity of a lifetime presented itself as the Seattle Police
Department sought to create its own dedicated Crime Scene Investigations Unit. Detective Stampfl was one of seven detectives
chosen to create the unit from the ground up, and has been there ever since. In addition to providing crime scene services
to the department, Detective Stampfl is a designated member of the department’s
Officer Involved Shooting Investigations Team, and in September 2011, he was
appointed as supervisor of the unit.
Detective Stampfl is a graduate of the National Forensic
Academy in Knoxville, Tennessee and is certified through the Force Science
Institute, which focuses on human dynamics in force encounters. He is an adjust faculty member of Seattle
University where he teaches a course in Crime Scene Investigation, and is a
member of Seattle University’s Criminal Justice Program Advisory Board.
