The College of Arts and Sciences has selected Jeffry Mitchell as the 2013 Visual Artist in Residence. Mitchell has exhibited at galleries and museums throughout the United States and Asia including the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City, Seattle Art Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, Fogg Art Museum, Philadelphia Art Museum, Portland Art Museum, and Tacoma Art Museum.

In Seattle University's Vachon Gallery, Mitchell will build a screen-printing laboratory that will be open from September until the end of December. The lab will be open to students, teachers, and other members of the Seattle arts community. At the end of his residency, Mitchell plans to publish a catalog of work created there. Visitors to the lab will also have the opportunity to paint Mitchell's ceramics themselves using screens crafted by the artist.

The Seattle University Visual Artist in Residence program provides artists with the time and space for open-ended investigation, experimentation, and collaboration, enabling them to push the boundaries of their own practice. Students as well as the larger community have the opportunity to observe and participate in the artist's creative process. This approach to arts education, which includes artist talks, open studios, and public programming, fosters community-building and provides a catalyst for social change. Mitchell's appointment is made possible by a grant from the Pigott Family Endowment for the Arts.
