Alumni Seminar Series - Spring Seminar 2008
Literature and Psychology
We turn to good literature for many of the same reasons we turn to counseling or psychotherapy. We want to understand our most profound moments of being human - our experiences of life and death, love and hate, growing up and growing old, the recurrence of memories or of trauma. In this seminar, Professor Jennifer Schulz, who is both an English teacher and a psychotherapist, will help place a variety of psychological theories in conversation with literary writers who represent the self in its most elusive and difficult conditions. We will discuss works by such authors as Edgar Allen Poe, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Art Spiegelman, Amy Bender, and others.
Jennifer Schulz, PhD, has a Master’s Degree in Psychology and a PhD in English. She teaches primarily in the English Department at SU, but offers a course every spring to psychology majors.
