Alumni Seminar Series - Fall Seminar 2008
Modern Jesuit Thinkers: Rahner, Lonergan, Teilhard
Jesuit thinkers have had a great influence on the past century, particularly in theology,
philosophy, and science. In this seminar, we will meet three of the great Jesuit thinkers
of modern times, Karl Rahner (1904 -1984), Bernard Lonergan (1904-1984), and
Teilhard de Chardin (1881 – 1955). Karl Rahner was a German philosopher and
theologian who attended Vatican II as an expert advisor, and who wrote many volumes
of theology about perennial and modern issues in spirituality and theology. Bernard
Lonergan was a Canadian thinker who taught theology at the Gregorian University in
Rome, Regis College in Toronto, and Boston College. His work on method in theology
and on the philosophical issues behind many modern problems earned him the title of ‘greatest Catholic thinker of the century.’ Finally, Teilhard de Chardin, born in France,
was famous as both a paleontologist working in China and a spiritual thinker about the
phenomenon of human development and our ultimate destiny.
This year’s Fall seminars meet from 6:00-8:30 p.m. on the following Monday evenings: October 6, 20, November 3, 17, and December 1, 8.
