Advisor - Advisee Responsibilities

Academic advising is a reciprocal relationship between academic advisors and advisees. Below is useful information regarding the expectations of advisors and advisees in the academic advising relationship.  

Academic Advisors help students to make and reach academic, career, and life goals. In this process, advisors expected to: 

• Assist students in discerning educational and career goals.
• Recommend and discuss co-curricular opportunities and make appropriate referrals as necessary.
• Connect students with campus resources; make appropriate referrals, and follow-up as necessary.
• Help students overcome barriers to academic success – this includes helping students to understand and track academic progress, referring students to learning assistance resources (Learning Assistance Center, Writing Center, etc.), and deciphering graduation requirements.
• Work with students to utilize academic planning materials and assume responsibility for their own education.
• Discuss course selection on a quarterly basis.
• Provide accurate information regarding requirements, policies and procedures.

Students are responsible for their educational experience. In the academic advising relationship, students are expected to: 

• Discern their educational goals and make an educational plan that includes academic and co-curricular activities.
• Know their curriculum requirements and track their progress towards graduation.
• Follow SU academic policies, procedures (such as drop/add), and deadlines.
• Use SU Online, the Catalog, and curriculum handbooks effectively as information resources.
• Use advising sessions effectively during Advising Weeks and otherwise as needed by making appointments, arriving on time, bringing needed materials such as a program evaluation copy, asking specific questions, and expecting advisors to work within their defined roles.
• Check SU email once per day.
