  • Big Wins for Debate Team

    October 4, 2012

The Debate Team starts the year off right with wins during its first debate. Seniors Michael Imeson Harvey, political science major (right), and Robert Noble, political science/economics major, were joined by freshman Malena Magallenz at the tournament held at Northwest University on September 28-29.

During a show debate (separate from the competition) on the topic “This House Fears the Rise of Artificial Intelligence, Harvey and Noble debated against Yale, Simon Fraser, and Northwest University. They won that round on an audience and judge vote.

On Saturday, they entered the final round where they once again faced debaters from Yale, Simon Fraser, and Northwest University. Their topic was “This House Would Genetically Modify Human Nature.” In a very close decision, Seattle University was named the winner of the entire tournament.

In more great news, Michael Harvey was the first place speaker out of all the debaters.

The Debate Team, which is sponsored by the Communication Department in the College of Arts and Sciences, is open to all students. The team is coached by Sofia Sanders, class of 2011.

The College of Arts and Sciences, the largest college in Seattle University, offers 42 undergraduate majors, 37 minors, and 7 master’s degrees
