  • Meyer Presents Jin Yan

    November 6, 2009

A presentation by SU Film Studies Professor Richard Meyer about his newly published book about Chinese silent films has been featured in the Northwest Asian Weekly newspaper. As a part of the University District bookstore's Reading Allowed program, he discussed how he was inspired by Chinese actor Jin Yan, hailed as the Rudolph Valentino of Shanghai in the book's title. Richard's Spring Quarter course  on Chinese Film meets elective requirements in Asian Studies, International Studies and Modern Languages.

“Jin Yan has fascinated me from the first time I saw him on the screen,” Meyer said. “And he, like Rudolph Valentino … fills that screen with such passion and such animal force that you can’t help but keep looking at it.” Valentino was a popular Italian silent film actor known as the ‘Latin Lover.’ Jin is commonly compared to Valentino.
