    Sam Green, Washington State Poet Laureate, was awarded the 2008 Washington State Book Award for poetry for his most recent work, The Grace of Necessity, published by Carnegie Mellon University Press. Sam, who is in his first year as the first Poet Laureate of Washington State, has been teaching at Seattle University since 2001 as a Distinguished Northwest Writer in Residence in the English/Creative Writing Program. In recent years, he has also taught poetry in the summer Writers Workshop in Ireland course offered to SU students. Sam lives on Waldron Island with his family, where he has operated the Brooding Heron Press for many years.
