Professor Rob Efird, Chair of the Department of Anthropology, Sociology and Social Work, published Schooling for Sustainable Development Across the Pacific, co-edited with John Chin-Kin Lee (Springer, 2014). Included in the book is his chapter “Closing the Green Gap: Policy and Practice in Chinese Environmental Education.”
“More and more schools are including environmental education and education for sustainable development in their curricula, and many countries mandate it in their education policies,” Efird said. “The book focuses on leading-edge practice, innovation, and depth of experience while detailing locally relevant and culturally appropriate strategies.”
The book presents regional overviews and case studies in environmental education and education for sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region, including examples in the United States and Canada.
Efird has spent over a decade in China and Japan and is proficient in both Mandarin Chinese and Japanese. Since 2006, his research has focused on assessing and assisting environmental education initiatives in mainland China’s Yunnan Province, Japan, and the Seattle area.
Efird received his PhD in Socio-cultural Anthropology from the University of Washington and joined the faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences in 2004. In 2010, he received a U.S. Fulbright Senior Research Scholar Grant to conduct ten months of fieldwork on environmental education in China. His work has also been supported by the Japan Foundation and the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission. His publications include research articles in the Journal of Japanese Studies, Journal of Contemporary China, and Anthropological Quarterly, as well as several book chapters.
