Social Work Professor Ruth White published an edited volume Global Case Studies in Maternal and Child Health (Jones and Bartlett Learning, 2013) this winter. The book is designed for students in public health, nursing, medicine, and allied health professions.
“The book presents structured case studies of community-based programs in maternal and child health from around the world,” White said. “These studies present real-life ethical, practical and theoretical challenges that give students models for their present and future work.”
Inspiration for the book came from White serving as the principal investigator for “Factors influencing choice of maternity services in Njeru, Uganda.” That study, which concluded in 2010, was a follow-up to her 5-year Safe Motherhood project with the community of Njeru that included the College of Nursing.
White, who teaches in the Department of Anthropology, Sociology, and Social Work, received her PhD and MPH from the University of California, Berkeley, and her MSW from McGill University. She joined the College of Arts and Sciences faculty in 2002. Her scholarship focus is on program development and evaluation; mental health; social determinants of health; maternal, child, and newborn health; reproductive health; comparative/international health and social welfare; and cultural/ethnic issues in social work and health.
