Professor Nicole Melton published “Prejudice Against Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Coaches: The influence of race, religious fundamentalism, modern sexism and contact with sexual minorities” in Sociology of Sport Journal (September 2012). In this study with Professor George B. Cunningham  of Texas A&M University, the researchers surveyed parents of children who participate in youth sport programs in Texas.  Melton teaches in the Master of Sport Administration and Leadership program.

The researchers examined the factors that influenced prejudice toward sexual minority coaches and found significant differences among Asians, Latinos, Whites, and African Americans.

“Our research provided insight into ways to address and potentially reduce sexual prejudice,” said Melton.

Melton received her Ph.D. from Texas A&M University and joined the College of Arts and Sciences faculty this year. Her research and scholarship focus on diversity and inclusion in athletics. She has published in prominent academic journals, written book chapters, and presented at national conferences. Her research includes examining the underrepresentation of various groups (e.g., women, racial minorities, and sexual minorities) in sport and investigating the nature of prejudice and discrimination, including how people respond to prejudicial behaviors.

The College of Arts and Sciences, the largest college in Seattle University, offers 42 undergraduate majors, 37 minors, and 7 master’s degrees, including the Master of Sport Administration and Leadership.
