Biography

Kan Liang was born and raised in China and received his BA in History from Nanjing University. He came to the USA to pursuit his doctorial degree, for which he attended Yale University and studied under the prominent Chinese historian Jonathan Spence. Upon finishing his Ph.D. in modern Chinese history, he joined the faculty of history department in 1995. He teaches East Asian civilization as his history core class, and offers variety of upper division courses on East Asia history, (mainly China and Japan), including Pre-modern China, Modern China, Modern Japan, Modern Asian Revolutions, Cultural History of Asia,China in the Changing World, etc. He regularly offers summer study abroad course and takes students to China. Dr. Liang’s research interests are the 20th century Chinese intellectual movement, history of early Chinese Communist Party, wars, and historical memory, and the Chinese Diaspora. Recently, he is writing a book on the China-Africa relations. Dr. Liang was the founding Director of Asian Studies Program at Seattle University, former Director of International Studies Program and Chair of History Department. Currently he serves as Associate Dean for Arts and Humanities for the College of Arts and Sciences. Because of his administrative duties, a number of his courses this year will be taught by Dr. Yun Xia, who joins us recently after receiving her Ph.D. in Chinese History from University of Oregon. Students are strongly encouraged to take Dr. Xia’s courses.
