Biography

Joni Balter is a veteran editorial writer and columnist, and now assistant political editor of The Seattle Times. Joni was a columnist and editorial writer for the editorial pages of the paper, focusing on politics and government --- national, state and local. Joni returned to the newsroom so she could try her hand at editing and managing the Politics Northwest blog while creating numerous online opportunities for the politics team. Joni appears weekly on KUOW's Weekday with Steve Scher, recounting the news of the week with a panel of journalists; she is also a weekly guest on KCTS-Connects, Channel 9's roundtable, hosted by Enrique Cerna. She joins a panel of political experts on that show as well. She is a regular moderator of public events, often hosted by the Seattle Chamber or City Club. Joni has been teaching opinion writing for six years at the University of Washington. She and her husband, the writer Timothy Egan, live in Seattle. They have two children.
