Accounting Students Win Case Competition

A team of SU accounting students took first place in the KPMG/Seattle University Accounting Case Competition held on April 21st. Seven schools from the Northwest participated and Courtney Beck, Vanessa Vasquez, Joe Purvis and Matt Clifford to take the top spot. Tom Kelley oversees the competition.

Red Winged Leadership Award

The third annual Red Winged Leadership Award ceremony will take place on May 10th at 6:30 PM in Pigott Auditorium. The award recognizes leadership, business acumen, and social impact. This year’s three finalists are Dan Wall, Expeditors International, Killian Noe, Recovery Café, and Jocquelyn Duncan, Work it Out Seattle. The event is organized by students in the Graduate Leadership Formation Specialization.

Albers Students Receive Fulbright Awards

An Albers alum and student received Fulbright Scholarships for 2012. Senay Kahsay, a 2008 Humanities and Business Economics graduate will study the coffee supply chain in Ethiopia. Michelle de Vera, who graduates in June as an Economics and Spanish major, will study in Mexico.

School Meeting

On April 20th, nearly 70 faculty and staff gathered for a school wide meeting. The main agenda item was a report from the taskforce looking at revisions to the undergraduate business core.

Celebration of Teaching

The first Albers Celebration of Teaching took place on April 20th. After presentations from Holly Slay, Carlos De Mello-e-Sousa, and Gareth Green, the audience adjourned to the Paccar Atrium to review 14 poster presentations on innovative teaching.

Outdoor Research CEO Speaks

Dan Nordstrom, CEO of Outdoor Research, spoke as part of the Albers Executive Speaker Series on April 26th. His presentation was on, “Anatomy of a Turnaround,” a look at the revival of the OR brand since he purchased the company in 2003.

Former Bombardier Leader to Speak

Gary Scott, who recently retired as President of Bombardier Commercial Aircraft, will participate in the Albers Executive Speaker Series on May 14th. It will be from 5:30 to 6:30 PM in Pigott Auditorium. His topic will be, “Leading a Non-US Global Enterprise.”

Volunteer Recognition Reception

This year’s Volunteer Recognition Reception will take place on May 14th from 4:00 to 5:30 PM in Casey Commons. The event will recognize the nearly 400 volunteers, including advisory board members and mentors, who assist us with the education of our students.

Gleed Presentation

Gleed Chair Dino Falaschetti is organizing a discussion of “Governance Institutions: From Geographic Causes to Business Consequences,” featuring Professor Victor Menaldo from the University of Washington. It will take place on May 3rd in Wyckoff Auditorium from 5:30 to 6:30 PM.

Albers Alumni Breakfast Series

The Albers Alumni Breakfast Speaker Series continues on May 16th with David Reid, giving a presentation on, "Reading the Tea Leaves: The Shape of China's Government for the Next Five Years and Implications for Business Policy." The event runs from 7:00 to 9:00 AM and is in room 160 of the SU Student Center.

Business Plan Competition Finals

The 14th annual Harriet Stephenson Business Plan Competition Final Presentations and Awards Reception will take place on May 17th in Campion Ballroom from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Entrepreneur and philanthropist Scott Oki is the keynote speaker.

Albers Career Night

Albers Career Night, a networking event for undergraduates, took place on May 1st. Nearly 150 undergraduate students and business professionals gathered to practice networking. The event was co-sponsored by the Albers Placement Center and nine Albers student organizations!

AACSB ICAM Meeting in San Diego

The 2012 AACSB ICAM (International Conference and Annual Meeting) was held in San Diego April 29-May 1. Albers was one of a number of schools recognized for reaffirmation of its AACSB accreditation. For the second year in a row, Dean Phillips won the door prize at the Beta Gamma Sigma Dean’s Luncheon, which entitles a SU BGS student to attend the BGS leadership conference for free. Topics covered at the meeting included changes to AACSB standards and the importance of innovation in the curriculum.

Howard Shultz

Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks, visited as part of the Albers Executive Speaker Series on April 10th. The title of his presentation was, “Business at Starbucks,” and over 450 were in attendance with many more wanting to get in.

Ethics in the Business World

On April 17th, Albers hosted, “Ethics in the Business World,” which featured 40 business leaders visiting classes to discuss ethical challenges they have faced in their career. Fifty-five Albers classes meeting that day participated. Other events took place throughout the day, including an Albers alumni event in the morning and a panel discussion late in the day organized by our new Net Impact chapter.

Intercultural Networking

The Albers International Student Advisory Council, the Global Business Club, and the Muslim Student Association are co-sponsoring “Intercultural Networking” on April 27th from 3:45 to 5:00 PM in Pigott Auditorium. Martin Coles, CEO of HaloSource, is the keynote speaker. A panel of alumni and current students will address challenges faced when working in other countries.

Alpha Sigma Nu

Teresa Ling and Harriet Stephenson are being inducted as honorary members of Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit honor society that recognizes scholarship, loyalty, and service. They will be joining 18 Albers undergraduate students and eight graduate students as new members. The installation ceremony is April 19th.

BAP Receives Regional Awards

Albers' Beta Alpha Psi chapter received two awards at the Beta Alpha Psi regional conference. Our BAP students took first place in the “Outside the Box” Best Practices category and second place in the “Social Media” category. First place winners, Angela Bever, Michelle Garvida, Lingzi Gong, Alysha Williams and Anh Chung shared their financial literacy work with the Girl Scouts. Michael Watson, Haley Henderson, and Michelle Spruch shared their innovative approach to social media in the “Social Media” category, garnering a second place award.

US News Rankings

The 2013 US News Graduate rankings have been released to institutions and Albers' Part-time MBA ranking is #73 which makes us #2 in the state of Washington and #2 in the Northwest and places us #35 among private schools nationwide. Albers did very well in the specialty rankings as well, Accounting ranks #19, LEMBA ranks #23, the fourth consecutive year of being in the Top 25; and Entrepreneurship returns to the rankings at #25.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek Undergraduate Rankings

Albers ranks #65 in the nation in The Bloomberg BusinessWeek 2012 undergraduate business school rankings. We are second in the Northwest and 7th in the West. We are 6th among Jesuit universities. We also rank in the Top 40 of business programs at private universities. Most impressively, Albers faculty received an "A+" in teaching! Quan Le has co-authored a book chapter, “A Study on Dioxin Contamination in Herbicide Sprayed Area in Vietnam by GIS,” which appears in Herbicides and Environment, edited by Andreas Kortekamp and published by InTech. The study looks at the effect of Agent Orange on Quang Tri province, which is where Quan’s family is from and where his research on micro-lending is taking place.

Al Ansari's article, “Challenges of Outsourcing Logistics to Third-Party Providers,” has been accepted for publication by the International Journal of Logistics Systems and Management.

Carl Obermiller has had two articles accepted for publication. The first is, “The Effects of Advertisement Picture Likeability on Information Search and Brand Choice", co-authored with Alan Sawyer (University of Florida), to be published in Marketing Letters. The second, co-authored with Ouidade Zaaraoui (University of Paris), is “Consumer Perception of Taboo in Ads,” which will appear in the Journal of Business Research.

Jot Yau, along with Hung-Gay Fung (University of Missouri at St. Louis) and Albers MBA alumna Sheryl Law (Peregreen Group LLC), co-authored a book entitled, Socially Responsible Investment in a Global Environment, to be published by Edward Elgar.

Diane Lockwood and Harriet Stephenson had their article, "The Impact of Contingent Time Off on Productivity in a Small Manufacturing Environment," co-authored with Colette Frayne (Cal Poly), has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Management and Marketing Research.

Holly Slay's and Jennifer Marrone's article, “A new look at humility: exploring the humility concept and its role in socialized charismatic leadership," co-authored with Albers alum Rob Nielsen, has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies. The paper is a culmination of work Rob did as an undergraduate student with Jennifer in the MGMT-380 course.

Peter Brous' paper, “Volatility Forecasting and Liquidity: Evidence from Individual Stocks,” co-authored with Ivilina Popova (Texas State) and Ufuk Ince, was accepted for publication in the Journal of Derivatives and Hedge Funds.

Bruce Koch's article, “The Interaction of Accountability and Post-Completion Audits on Capital Budgeting Decisions,” co-authored with Alan Mayper and Neil Wilner (University of North Texas), has been accepted for publication in the Academy of Accounting and Financial Studies Journal.

Bill Weis and David Arnesen had their article, “The Use of Training Groups (T-Groups) in Raising Self and Social Awareness and Enhancing Emotionally Intelligent Behaviors,” co-authored with MBA student Lisa Hanson, has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Organizational Culture, Communications, and Conflict.

Rubina Mahsud's article, “Linking Strategic Leadership and Human Resource Management,” co-authored with Gary Yukl (SUNY-Albany), was published in the April, 2009 edition of the NHRD Network Journal.

Greg Magnan has had two articles accepted for publication in Industrial Marketing Management. The first is, “Evaluating the Bases of Supplier Segmentation: A Critical Review and Taxonomy,” co-authored with Marc Day (Henley Business School) and Morten Munkgaard Moeller ( Dansk Indkøbs- og Logistik Forum). The second is, “Exploring the Reputation Metaphor in B2B Partnerships: Extending the Study of Reputation from the Perception of Single Firms to the Perception of Inter-firm Partnerships,” co-authored with Mark Day, Kevin Money, and Carola Hillenbrand (all with Henley).

Ben Kim and James Lee had their article, “Toward Intelligent Business Integration: The Semantic Web," co-authored with Surinder Kahai (SUNY-Binghamton) and Yong J. Kim (Sogang University), accepted for publication in Issues in Information Systems.

Bryan Ruppert's book, The Origins of Political and Economic Supranationalism in the German Constitution, has been accepted for publication by Mellen Press.

Chips Chipalkatti and Meena Rishi had their article, “Do Public Governance and the Depth of Financial Intermediation Impact the Entrepreneurship-Growth Relationship?” accepted for publication in the International Journal of Social Entrepreneurship.

Meena Rishi's article, “Economic and Social Characteristics of Albanian Immigrant Entrepreneurs in Greece,” co-authored with Daphne Halkias (Helenic American University), Paul Thurman (Columbia), et al. has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship.

Madhu Rao's paper, ““Developing Global Leadership in Emerging Nations: A View From India,” co-authored with Sandeep Arora, (Accenture, India), has been accepted for publication in the Journal for Political Consulting and Policy.
